Interpretation, Reception, Conservation

This conference, which has been organised by the Education Department at the
National Galleries of
Scotland in conjunction with VARIE (the Visual Arts Research Institute,
Edinburgh), accompanies the
National Galleries' major exhibition for summer 2005, Gauguin's Vision (6 July
- 2 October 2005,
Royal Scottish Academy Building). Comprising 84 works, the exhibition explores
Paul Gauguin's
seminal painting Vision of the Sermon: Jacob Wrestling with the Angel (1888),
in context, looking
closely at its sources, making and impact. The one-and-a-half-day conference
brings together
specialists from around the world who will debate the issues raised by this
painting, from a broad
range of new perspectives.

Speakers include Debora Silverman (Professor of Modern European History, Art
and Culture, University
of California, Los Angeles); Denise Delouche (Professor Emeritus at the
University of Rennes); James
McMillan (Richard Pares Professor of History, University of Edinburgh); Fred
Leeman (Independent
Scholar, Amsterdam); Rodolphe Rapetti (Directeur adjoint, Réunion des Musées
Nationaux; Director,
Musée Henner, Paris; Director, Musée Henner, Paris); Juliet Simpson (Professor
of Art History and
Visual Culture, Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College); Lesley Stevenson
(Senior Paintings
Conservator, National Galleries of Scotland) and Elise Eckermann (Independent
Scholar, Frankfurt).
