>From Object to Context
Hans Haacke, Thomas Schütte, Sabine Breitwieser
Tuesday, October 26
Sackler lecture hall, 6 p.m.
Free admission
Presented in connection with the exhibition Dependent Objects at the
Busch-Reisinger Museum (September 18th, 2004-January 2, 2005),
this event will feature presentations by artists Hans Haacke (New York)
and Thomas Schütte (Duesseldorf), as well as curator Sabine Breitwieser
(Generali Foundation, Vienna). Participants will discuss the considerations
and concepts that went into the production of their sculptures in the
exhibition. While the ethos of the 1960s led many artists and critics to
reject the precious sculptural object, others continued to produce objects
that emphasized the physical, social, and political context of production
and display. Haacke's entire career has been marked by the concern for the
active involvement of the public in his work; Schütte's works from the late
1970s reflect his humorous engagement with earlier conceptual art as
well as his interest in the artwork's environment and potential use.
As the director of the Generali Foundation in Vienna, Sabine Breitwieser
has assembled a collection of international contemporary art with a focus
on sculpture in the expanded fields emphasizing photography, film,
video, and installation.
