1923: Art in Context

The papers in this panel will examine art produced in 1923 in the context
of that year's events. By narrowing the chronological dimension so
tightly, a geographical breadth is possible without being incoherent;
indeed, a juxtaposition of topics that would not normally be discussed in
conjunction could furnish enlightening perspectives. I will be looking for
papers that not only consider art in the context of concurrent
intellectual or historical events -- such as György Lukács' publication of
History and Class Consciousness or the opening of the Cotton Club in
Harlem -- but that complement each other. Possible themes include the
particular relationship of technology and art at that moment, or the clash
and conjunction of the avant-garde and tradition, or the way ideas
percolating for years congealed after World War I. I encourage papers that
look closely at the historical moment as it unfolds anywhere in the world.
