Low Countries Sculpture Society.
Calendar of Events - Fall 2003.

Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 August 2003

Study visits around Groningen (Saturday) and in
Leeuwarden (Sunday) on the theme of

Discovering hidden historic sculpture in Friesland
and Groningen

including major works by Rombout Verhulst and the
recently conserved studio content of Pier Pander.

Friesland and Groningen boast some spectacular
sculpture that few people know. The first day will
principally be spent discussing marble tomb
monuments (by Rombout Verhulst) and church
furniture in villages surrounding the city of
Groningen. The outbuildings of the country house
that, in the nineteenth century replaced the
seventeenth-century house of important patrons of
Verhulst, now house the national carriage museum
with some interesting sculptural connections. The
theme of the next day will be introduced at
Jelsum, where we will see the earliest extant
plaster sculpture in the Netherlands, recently
conserved by Terwen Consultancy. The Sunday will
have the highlight of the Pier Pander collection
of plaster models as well as a few terracotta,
plasticine and marble works the conservation of
which is nearing completion (also by Terwen
Consultancy).

Led by Art Historian and Sculpture Conservator
Pier Terwen

« Sculpture and Devotion in the Rhineland »

ANNUAL TOUR 2003 from Kleve to Köln

Saturday 20 to Monday 22 September 2003

The lower Rhineland was a fertile ground for
Catholic devotion in the late Middle Ages and
despite the iconoclastic revolts of the later 16th
century and the world wars, many altars survive.
The tour will spend the first two days principally
looking at and discussing the sculpture in
churches and museums in Kalkar, Xanten, Kleve and
elsewhere in the region, some of which are packed
with late medieval sculpture.

The principal artists we will encounter are Arnt
van Swol, Jan Borman and Arnt van Tricht as well
as many local artists who imitated the frequent
imports of altarpieces from Brussels and
particularly Antwerpen.

On the Sunday afternoon we will travel down to
Köln, where a visit of two of the many important
churches will give us a flavour of the history and
transformation of church sculpture in this
metropole between the Romanesque and the 20th
century, themes that will also be pursued the next
morning in a visit of the principal sculpture in
the cathedral (among others by Cornelis Floris,
1514-75) and the Schnütgen Museum.

Partly led by the Art Historians Guido de Werd,
Director Kurhaus Kleve, and Dr Hiltrud
Westermann-Angerhausen, Director Schnütgen Museum,
Köln
