Dear colleagues,
I am urgently looking for any information about the Swiss painter Martha
Stettler (1870-1945) and her friend the Baltic painter Alice Dannenberg
(1861-1948).
Martha Stettler was born in Berne, Switzerland, of an upper class family.
Since her childhood she had been encouraged to become an artist. In 1893 she
moved to Paris, where she remained until her unexpected death in 1945. Her
œuvre consists of children scenes as well as portraits, depicted in Parisian
parks or interiors, and also of landscapes -mostly the Swiss Alps - and of
portraits. Her paintings put her close to the Impressionists and the Nabis.
The painterly quality of her brushwork show her using rhythmical accents of
light and dark in order to record and convey an appropriate atmosphere of
the subject matter onto the canvas.
During her artistic career, Martha Stettler studied many years as a pupil
under different teachers (Luc-Olivier Merson, Lucien Simon), travelled
throughout Europe for the purpose of studying and participated in renowned
exhibitions.
Stettler and Dannenberg made an important contribution to 20th-century art
by co-founding and leading the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris
(about 1902-1948).
I’m preparing a thesis over Martha Stettler and Alice Dannenberg and their
role in the académie de la Grande Chaumière. Please can you give me any
information about these two women or the academy
Do you know pictures,
letters or photos
Sincerely,
Corinne Sotzek
