Art History and Technical Investigation. The genesis of Dutch 17th-century
paintings

Laboratories and conservation studios have developed a wide range of
investigative techniques whose applications provide new insights into the
material aspects of paintings. The emphasis during this symposium will not
be on technical investigation per se, but on its contribution to the
art-historical interpretation of paintings.

Twelve lectures and subsequent discussions will focus on the genesis of
Dutch 17th-century paintings. The following subjects will be addressed:
Rembrandt, the Oranjezaal, genre painting, landscapes, portraits, still
lifes and architectural paintings.

The lectures will be given in English or Dutch. The symposium will be held
in the auditorium of the Royal Library, Prins Willem-Alexanderhof 5, The
Hague.

Registration fee: NLG 100 (special student fee: NLG 65), excluding lunch at
NLG 25 for two days.
