"Enlightenment legacy: the rights of man in a global perspective." (2021-2023)

Fondazione 1563 per l’Arte e la Cultura of the Compagnia di San Paolo has supported research and advanced training in the field of the humanities since 2013. In a wider effort to pursue this goal, Fondazione 1563 is now expanding its fellowship programme to historical research in a global perspective. To this end, it has created the Turin Humanities Programme (THP), a research initiative that will allow junior scholars to work on interrelated research projects under the guidance of especially appointed senior scholars.

The Scientific Committee of the THP and Fondazione1563 have decided to devote the first research cycle of the THP (2021-2023) to the investigation of the "Enlightenment legacy: the rights of man in a global perspective."

The Director of Studies for this programme (2021-2023) will be Vincenzo Ferrone, Professor of Modern History in the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Turin, Italy.

Fondazione 1563 is pleased to launch the first call for applications to award 4 two-year fellowships for advanced studies. Applicants are invited to submit research projects of a maximum of 3.000 words, plus bibliography.
Proposals are expected to focus on the worldwide legacy of Enlightenment in the field of the rights of man, especially but not exclusively in the nineteenth century, as described in the research framework on the website of THP. Proposals should also contain an illustration of the different project phases, the relevant sources and methodologies and the expected outcomes, which will be considered an integral part of the project itself.

- The call is open to applicants holding a doctorate in History or in any Humanities discipline.
- They must be fluent in English, both spoken and written. English will be the default language of THP.
- Applicants should normally be within 7 years of the award of their PhD.
- There are no nationality requirements.
- Fondazione 1563 encourages applications from scholars of all backgrounds.
- We welcome diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive work environment.

Each of the 4 Fellowships consists of an annual grant of € 25.000 (before taxes). The grant will last two years, starting on September 1, 2021 until August 31, 2023. The total amount awarded to each individual fellow during the two-year fellowship will therefore be € 50.000 (before taxes). These grants may not be held in conjunction with any other award.

Applications must be submitted online by filling the form available on the website of Fondazione 1563 at: http://www.fondazione1563.it/application-form-thp-2020/ under THP/Call for applications/THP–2020.
Applications submitted by other means will not be considered.
