DEFENSELESS ART: THE DESTINY OF ARTISTS AND COLLECTIONS AFTER THE ENACTMENT OF THE RACIAL LAWS

Starting from the CLAIMS CONFERENCE (Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany) of 1951 the subject of material claims, restitutions or reparations, in favour of the victims of the Holocaust has assumed progressive international importance. The Washington Conference on Holocaust-Era Assets, promoted in 1998 under the aegis of the US Foreign Ministry in agreement with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, approved the WASHINGTON PRINCIPLES on Nazi-Confiscated Art, soft law, determinant and not directly applicable guide lines, which established principles reaffirmed and strengthened in Vilnius (2000) and Terezin (2009). Recent and in-depth studies on the protection of heritage during the Second World War made it possible to trace extremely interesting lines of research on the fate of the Jewish collections after the issuing of the different international restrictive laws issued by individual nations or promoted and applied during the course of Nazi-Fascist dominations.

This call intends to accept studies and research on the antiquarian trade, relating to the channels of dispersion and conservation, on the role of museum institutes, with regard to the individual national liquidation and confiscation bodies, regarding the role assumed by the international Commissions and subcommittees, both contemporary to the facts and later. Studies on Jewish collecting will also be taken into consideration, in particular on the evolution of the transnational taste for the congener arts and on the post Jewish Emancipation in Europe increase dynamics. Another area of interest in this call is the one linked to the events that occurred in the individual collections and to the fate of artists and artist studios, whose destinies were interrupted by anti-Semitic measures.

Interested parties are invited to send an abstract of the contribution they intend to propose (maximum 2,000 characters including spaces) by February 3th. The abstract must be sent to c.paparellounimc.it. By 20th February 2020, any acceptance by the Scientific Committee will be communicated via e-mail, together with information on hospitality for conference attendees. Contributions for the conference proceedings, between 20,000 and 80,000 characters long, in Italian, English or other European languages, accompanied by abstracts in English, as well as in the language of the paper, must be submitted by 30th November 2020.
