Bildmedien der Taufe - im Spannungsfeld von Ort, Ritual und Gemeinschaft

[English version below]

Baptism and its Artefacts. Space, Images and Community in a ritual context

As the first of the sacraments, Baptism has central significance in theology, for the constitution of the Church as place of salvation and of the Christian community. Nonetheless baptism and its artefacts have so far played a rather marginal role in art historical research, even if recently the interest in spaces, architecture and objects related to baptism has been constantly growing as the increasing number of monographs, international and interdisciplinary articles show. Regarding the wide range of manifestations and complexity of problems, which are connected to the cultural practice of Christian initiation the conference aims to give a bigger picture of baptismal architecture and its decoration, especially in the moment of its liturgical activation, taking into account not only art historical and architectural research but also aspects of devotional and sociological practice from Early Christianity to the Middle Ages.

Conference talks will consider freestanding baptisteries as well as baptismal chapels adjacent to churches, their decoration, fonts and liturgical equipment, image cycles, spolia, relics, etc. The underlying thesis is that architectonical spaces and artefacts have a special affordance for the ritual actions they were created for and are able to memorize these actions for future users. Art history may profit therefore of a careful analysis of the artefacts in their original context to understand the importance of baptismal settings for medieval communities. Special attention will be given to the role of civic rituals and memory connected to the baptismal sites, asking for their important contribution to the identity of medieval communities. To improve the dialogue between university and the non-scientific audience the conference will be open to the public, including the keynote lecture and a concert related to the conference theme.
