Cultural Heritage: On Sharing, Caring, and Accessing

The workshop aims to address issues which are at the heart of current debates on accessing, sharing and caring cultural heritage. Whereas the importance of cultural heritage in the history of humanity is unquestioned, the idea of what exactly constitutes ‘cultural heritage’ as well as notions of ownership, restitution and conservation are more complex. They go along with different ways of circulation, categorization and the attributions of meaning. Thus, the understanding of cultural heritage is becoming increasingly broad and includes other aspects such as migration flows. Against this background, a more intensive and critical reflection on new forms of cultural heritage governance is needed.

Most recently Achille Mbembe spoke against a 'sorting' of objects and people according to regions of origin. He thus not only criticized a misleading and outmoded concept of 'cultural purity', but also referred to the problem of a west-centric concept of ownership and of different notions on the ‘rights to the object’. The discussion of new and hitherto neglected scenarios of sharing and caring are the focus of the workshop. The circulation of cultural goods will be discussed as a dimension of cultural diversity, sharing as an aspect of loss and identity, and finally accessing as a dimension of sharing, which needs the involvement of private and public actors. With this we hope to contribute to a better understanding of the predicaments in ever more interconnected cosmopolitan and diasporic worlds.
