Filters and Frames. Developing meaning in photography and beyond

Das Symposium "Filters and Frames. Developing meaning in photography and beyond" bildet den Abschluss der gleichnamigen Ausstellung in der Galerie der HBK Braunschweig. Diese befragt inhaltliche und formale Verstrickungen medialer Sichtbarkeit und Unsichtbarkeit. Das Aufnehmen von Fotografien sowie der Umgang mit fotografischen Bildern ist untrennbar verknüpft mit Prozessen des Auswählens, Sortierens und Trennens – Prozesse die unsere Bildfindung und -wahrnehmung wesentlich beeinflussen, strukturieren und konditionieren. Jedoch treten sie nur selten offen zutage, es sei denn an Bruchstellen und Diskontinuitäten oder wenn sie explizit zum Thema werden. Welche apparativen Bedingungen und Diskurse prägen die Auswahl-und Ausschnittprozesse fotografischer Bilder? Welche Narrative, Deutungsmuster und -hoheiten werden dabei bedient, stabilisiert oder auch infrage gestellt?
Die Beiträge reflektieren Filter und Rahmen als konkrete Phänomene, aber auch als Prozesse mit kulturtheoretischen und politischen Implikationen.

Das Symposium verschränkt Theorie und Praxis miteinander, Gespräche und Vorträge von und mit Wissenschaftlerinnen und Künstlerinnen ermöglichen eine inhaltliche Vertiefung sowie Raum für Dialog und Diskussion.

The symposium "Filters and Frames: Developing meaning in photography and beyond" marks the end of the eponymous exhibition in the gallery of the Braunschweig University of Arts. It adresses the entaglements of photographic visibility and invisibility in form and content. Taking photographs, as well as the engagement with photographic images, is linked to processes of selecting, sorting and separating – processes that essentially influence our acquisition and perception of these images. However, they rarely show openly, except at breakpoints and discontinuities, or when they explicitly become the topic. Which conditions and discourses characterize the selection and extraction processes of photographic images? Which narratives, interpretive patterns and sovereignties are stabilized or questioned?
The contributions reflect filters and frames as concrete phenomena, but also as processes with cultural-theoretical and political implications.

The symposium interlinks theory and practice, discussions and lectures by and with scientists and artists allow a deepening of the content as well as space for dialogue and discussion.
