View. Theories and Practices of Visual Culture, issue 23: Deformations

Managing editors: Agata Zborowska, Katarzyna Bojarska

In the sphere of visual culture, as in any other area, various forms of life and creation are accompanied by processes of destruction, forgetfulness, and mutilation. What is the agency of images which have been mutilated or deformed as a result of the mere passage of time, historical turmoil or biological processes? Can destruction be a positive and culture-forming force, which – while creating mutilated, de-formed images – makes one look at images differently? What social meaning is created by mutilated images, what reactions do they evoke and into what kind of social relations do they enter?

In the 23rd issue of View, we would like to ask how disability as an experience and as form influences the production and reception of images in the visual field. How do images “with disabilities” function in the ableist world, and what kinds of agencies do they produce or represent? What does a deficit (in an image or vision) mean and how does it operate in the visual sphere – should it be excluded, overcome, fixed or instead embraced and understood? What does the making visible of disability mean and how does it transform the structure of the visible? Should we think of disability not within a technical but, rather, a minority discourse allowing for a criticism of oppressive, ableist narratives and pointing towards emancipatory ones?

We invite you to consult the managing editors of the issue regarding the topic of your article (redakcjapismowidok.org).
