Contemporary Art in Historic Contexts (Miami, 25-27 Feb 18)

Miami (FL, USA), Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, 3251 South Miami Ave., 25.–27.02.2018
Anmeldeschluss: 26.02.2018

Liz Shannon

Join us for a two-day international symposium examining the curatorial, artistic, and interpretive processes of presenting contemporary art in historic contexts. The program is organized and hosted by Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, the former winter estate of industrialist James Deering, in Miami, Florida. Alongside its centennial, Vizcaya celebrated ten years of its Contemporary Arts Program (CAP) in 2017. This symposium is an opportunity to reflect upon the multifaceted matters raised when artists create site-specific work in a historic context. It includes contributions from USA and international curators, scholars, academics, educators and artists on issues surrounding the commissioning and presentation of contemporary art in historic contexts and in public art contexts generally. Participants from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum (Boston, USA), Sir John Soane's Museum (London, UK), Jane Addams Hull-House (Chicago, USA), The Frick Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh, USA), Huis Sonneveld (Rotterdam, NL), University of Leicester (Leicester, UK) and Kunstglaube (Vienna, AT) are confirmed to present. The symposium takes place against the background of Overload, an exhibition featuring commissioned work by David Brooks (NY, NY), Orlando Jacinto Garcia (Havana, Cuba and Miami, FL), Arnout Meijer (Amsterdam, NL), and Tanja Smeets (Utrecht, NL).
