Matthijs Maris at Work (Amsterdam, 14 Dec 17)

Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, 14.12.2017
Anmeldeschluss: 01.12.2017

Jenny Reynaerts, rijksmuseum amsterdam

The Matthijs Maris exhibition at the Rijksmuseum (6 October 2017 - 7 January 2018) will offer the largest overview ever of this enigmatic artist. Raised among his Hague School brothers, Matthijs chose his own path and gradually developed into a cult figure for symbolist artists around 1900. His experimental technique, resulting in soft, sfumato imagery has been analysed in the conservation department of the Rijksmuseum, with revealing and fascinating results. At a one day conference, these results will be presented in context, including comparisons with the technique and studio practice of James Whistler, Adolphe Monticelli and CamilleCorot.

The Burrell Collection (Glasgow Museums) holds a large number of late paintings and charcoals by Matthijs Maris, which have never before been shown outside the UK. Twenty-five of these will be exhibited at the Rijksmuseum.
Seven were examined for the conservation project, together with the holdings of the Rijksmuseum and paintings from a private collection.
