Session:
Jewish and Sephardic Otherness in Space and Architecture

This session will focus on the depiction of Jewish Otherness in architecture. It will focus on the sculptural and painted decorations showing Jewish dance, flowers, plants, and animals related to Jewish tradition, Hebrew and Hebraic inscriptions which show foreign tradition regarding Christian tradition in Europe. The focus is set on the link between private and public spaces, political, economic and cross-cultural relationships focusing on the architectural and spatial construction of Jewish and Christian otherness and identity during the Middle Ages (1215-1500).

Session 227:
Oriental and Muslim Otherness in Western Space and Architecture

This session will focus on the depiction of Otherness in paintings and sculpted ornaments in architecture which show intercultural connections between Muslim, Oriental and Christian, Western cultures in Italy and Spain. This session focus on the depiction of foreign animals, astrology and dance. Depicted in private spaces, they underline a special link with the exterior. Therefore, we will show how political, economic, and cultural interrelations influence the question and the construction of the Christian space during the Middle Ages (until 1500).
