The ART OF HANS ARP AFTER 1945

Nach 1945 erlebte Hans Arp seinen internationalen Durchbruch. In der Spätphase seines künstlerischen Schaffens führte der deutsch-französische Künstler neue Kategorien in die Kunst ein, wie die so genannten Schwellenplastiken, die découpage ebenso wie die papier déchirées und papier froissés. Doch sind es nicht nur formale Neuerungen, die sich in seinem Werk manifestieren, gleichermaßen tauchen vermehrt Bezüge zur Mystik des Spätmittelalters sowie zu antiken oder außereuropäischen Kulturen auf. Darüber hinaus erschienen gerade in den 1950er-Jahren zahlreiche seiner Gedichtbände. Neben seinen eigenen künstlerischen Errungenschaften im Spätwerk wirkte Hans Arps künstlerischer Ansatz maßgebend auf viele andere Künstler seiner Zeit. Arps organische Formen wurden zu einer Chiffre der modernen Kunst, die nicht nur Widerhall in der bildenden Kunst, sondern gleichermaßen in der Literatur und organischen Architektur ebenso wie im Design und der Produktgestaltung der 1950er-Jahre fand. Es ist erstaunlich, dass das Spätwerk von Hans Arp bisher kaum wissenschaftliche Beachtung fand. Die Tagung möchte diese Lücke füllen und neue Sichtweisen auf das Spätwerk von Hans Arp eröffnen sowie Arps wegweisende Rolle für die Entwicklung der internationalen Moderne der Nachkriegszeit herausstellen.

Hans Arp gained broad international recognition after 1945. During this latter phase of his career, the French-German artist continued to develop new series, including the so-called Threshold Sculptures, as well as innovative techniques like découpage, papiers déchirées and papiers froissés. However, Arp did not limit himself to formal innovation; in terms of content, he drew from medieval mysticism as well as ancient and non-Western cultures. During the 1950s, Arp published several volumes of poetry in German and French. Having made great strides during this later phase of his career, Arp also became an influential figure to the next generation of artists. His biomorphic forms became cipher for modern art, finding echoes in literature and organic architecture as well as the design and product development of the 1950s. It is therefore surprising that Arp’s late work has received little scholarly attention. The conference will fill that gap by opening up new avenues for scholarly discourse on Hans Arp’s late oeuvre and to shed light on his transformative influence on international modernism in the post-war period.
