At the international symposium PLASTICS HERITAGE, organised by the German Society for Plastics History dgkg, the HTW Berlin and the Friend’s Association of the Study Course KRG at the HTW Berlin KOREGT, 24 oral and 10 poster presentations in total from 12 countries offer a broad range of many aspects of plastics history and heritage.
Topics for discussion include the history of the development, production, and application of polymer/plastic materials, alongside their use in art and design, for everyday purposes, in technical settings, and as architectural elements. Plastic materials with their special properties have strongly influenced all these areas. Contributions from related developments will be given.
The preservation and handling of these modern materials additionally play an important role in the context of collection management. With their diverse applications and aging processes, polymers pose distinct challenges in conservation science, equally pertinent to both conservators and curators in museum collections. Bearing this in mind, conservational treatments both of and with plastic will be addressed during the symposium.
