3rd PhD Students' Meeting on the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period (14th-17th Centuries)

From the Middle Ages to the revolution caused by Galilean science, Europe was going through constant questioning. This situation challenged its political stability and legitimacy, it undermined the foundations of confessional unity and it moved the borders of knowledge and creation. Aiming to transcend the divisions inherited from a long historiographical tradition, the Research Department Transitions addresses the mutations which characterize the Late Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period (14th-17th centuries) (http://web.philo.ulg.ac.be/transitions/en/). This department intends to enlarge our interests to the multiplicity of factors which contributed to the political and cultural construction of the frames within which we still define ourselves today.

Within the context of the doctoral training of young researchers – across all disciplines – who take interest in this period, Transitions organises a two-day meeting for PhD students on the Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th of January 2016. This event is meant to promote exchange and confrontation of ideas and research methods between students, PhD students and researchers coming from different countries in fields as diverse as history, art history, archaeology, musicology, philology, linguistics and French or Italian literature. Those two days are organised around lectures given by PhD students who are either at the beginning or at the end of their PhD. They are invited to present the documents – in a broader sense -, the methods and the concepts on which they are working.

We wish the lectures to be the subject of transdisciplinary discussions. They should not last more than twenty minutes. They will be given either in French or in English. Each lecture will then be followed by a short debate with the audience.

The organising committee is expecting the PhD students' proposals for Friday the 30rd of October 2015 at the latest. They will be addressed to the RD Transitions (transitionsulg.ac.be) in an attached document that includes the personal data of the PhD student and those of the research director(s), as well as the title of the thesis, the title of the lecture, the year of registration as a PhD student and, finally, a fifteen-line summary of the proposed lecture. Proposals are to be written in French or in English. Candidates will be informed of the approval or the rejection of their proposal by late November.

Each PhD student is invited to contact his own institution about the possibility to valorise their participation to the study days in the framework of their doctoral training (attestation, ECTS credits, etc.). At the end of the seminar, the organizers will provide a document certifying the active participation of the PhD student to the meeting.
