The Critical Writing in Art & Design programme at the Royal College of Art, London, will be hosting a day of talks, screenings and conversations exploring the life and work of writer, critic and filmmaker John Berger at the Royal College of Art, Friday 17 April 2015. On the Archive – a talk by Tom Overton.

After cataloguing the Berger archive for the British Library, writer Tom Overton is now preparing a selection of Berger’s writing on art for two volumes which will be published by Verso later this year.

On Television – filmmakers Mike Dibb and John Christie will be in conversation about working with Berger’s work for / on television.

Dibb is a documentary filmmaker with a long and rich catalogue of programmes. Berger and Dibb made Ways of Seeing (1972), the landmark programme on the circulation and effects of images. Christie is an artist, writer and publisher. His TV programmes include Another Way of Telling, a BBC series on photography made in collaboration with Berger and Jean Mohr. He also co-authored, with Berger, the award-winning book I Send You This Cadmium Red.

A Fortunate Man (1967) – Gavin Francis, Iona Heath and Brian Dillon will discuss Berger and photographer Jean Mohr’s intimate book on the life and work of a rural doctor.

Novelist and GP, Gavin Francis played a key role in the February 2015 re-issue of this book, writing a new forward. Iona Heath was until recently a GP for 35 years in Kentish Town, London. She is the author of Matters of Life and Death (2007).

On radio – writer and curator Gareth Evans will introduce a number of clips of historic broadcasts for radio by Berger

'Taskafa, Stories of the Street' (2013) – a screening of a film about resistance and co-existence voiced by John Berger from his novel King.

The film will be introduced by Andrea Luka Zimmerman, its maker, and Adrian Jackson.
