Sculpture and Photography: The Art Object in Reproduction

Co-sponsored by the Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, Mass., and the Getty Research Institute, Los Angeles

September 26-27 and October 25, 2014

Convened by Sarah Hamill, Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art, Oberlin College, and Megan Luke, Assistant Professor of Art History, University of Southern California

This symposium explores the intersections between sculpture and photography to assess the current roles of photographic reproduction in art historical writing and the impacts of new media on art practices. How have photographs of sculpture affected art historical narratives? How does photography transform and mediate our encounters with objects? Speakers will discuss a wide range of images and cultural artifacts to investigate the broader role of photographic reproductions in the writing of art history and the impact of reproductive media on artistic practice. Exploring the material, procedural, and historical tensions between two mediums, papers will open a broader conversation about the study of art history, architecture, anthropology, film, new media, archaeology, the history of collecting, and museum display.
