Die von zwei öffentlichen Abendvorträgen begleitete, internationale Tagung "Aufgeklärter Kunstdiskurs und höfische Sammelpraxis" dient dem wissenschaftlichen Austausch über ein gleichnamiges Forschungsprojekt, das seit Juni 2013 durch die VolkswagenStiftung gefördert wird. Sie richtet sich an ein interessiertes Fachpublikum.

Im Fokus des interdisziplinären Kooperationsprojekts zwischen der Staatlichen Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, dem Generallandesarchiv Karlsruhe und der Universität Mendrisio (Schweiz), steht die umfassende kunsthistorische und ideengeschichtliche Erforschung des einst über 200 Gemälde umfassenden "Mahlerey-Cabinets" der badischen Markgräfin Karoline Luise (1723-1783), das noch heute zu großen Teilen in der Staatlichen Kunsthalle Karlsruhe erhalten ist. Den Schwerpunkt der ab 1759 mit Hilfe eines europaweiten Netzwerks von Korrespondenten und Agenten sorgfältig zusammengestellten (Privat-)Sammlung bildeten Werke der niederländischen und der französischen Schule des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts.
Neben den Kunstwerken selbst steht den Projektbeteiligten die umfangreiche, größtenteils unpublizierte Korrespondenz der Markgräfin mit mehr als 750 Persönlichkeiten in ganz Europa zur Verfügung, die zu diesem Zweck erstmals vollumfänglich in einer wissenschaftlichen Datenbank erfasst wird.

Im Rahmen der Tagung werden 18 Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus Deutschland, der Schweiz, Frankreich, England, Schweden und den Niederlanden in vier Sektionen den Leitfragen des Forschungsprojekts nachgehen. Die wissenschaftlichen Impulse der Fachtagung werden nicht zuletzt der Konzeption der Großen Landesausstellung „Die Meister-Sammlerin. Karoline Luise von Baden (1723-1783)“ zugute kommen, die anlässlich des 300-jährigen Jubiläums der Stadtgründung von 30. Mai bis 6. September 2015 in der Staatlichen Kunsthalle Karlsruhe zu sehen sein wird.

In September 2014, the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe will be presenting the international conference "Enlightened Discourse in Art and Courtly Collecting Practices" to an interested audience. The aim of this conference is to help promote the academic exchange on a research project of the same name, funded by the VolkswagenStiftung since June 2013. The conference will also be accompanied by two evening lectures open to the general public.

This research project is an interdisciplinary cooperation between the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe, the Generallandesarchiv Karlsruhe and the University of Mendrisio (Switzerland). The project focuses on the comprehensive study into the history of art and ideas of Caroline Louise’s ‘cabinet of paintings’, an extensive collection that once included more than 200 paintings. To a large extent this collection is still preserved at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe. The Margravine of Baden carefully assembled her collection mainly focusing on the Dutch and French schools of the 17th and 18th centuries. She began building her collection with the help of her European-wide network of correspondents and agents in 1759. In addition to the works themselves, the Margravine’s largely unpublished correspondence with more than 750 prominent historical figures from across Europe will be made available in full in a scholarly database for the first time.

Participating at the conference are 18 academics from Germany, Switzerland, France, England, Sweden and the Netherlands who will be investigating in four separate sections the central questions of this research project. To some extent, the conference’s scholarly impulses will also benefit the exhibition concept of the upcoming Baden Wurttemberg State Exhibition “Caroline Louise of Baden (1723-1783). A collector of European standing“. This exhibition will be on display at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Karlsruhe for the 300th anniversary of the city’s founding from 30 May to 6 September 2015.
