Artistic Exchange and Innovation in the Low Countries (Rotterdam, 10-11 Apr 14)

Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands, Apr 10–11, 2014

David van der Linden

Conference Art on the Move: Artistic Exchange and Innovation in the Low Countries, 1572–1700

Date: 10-11 April 2014
Location: Museum Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, The Netherlands

During the seventeenth century, the market for visual arts flourished in Low Countries. Artists in the Dutch Republic produced a staggering amount of cheap prints and top-quality paintings, just as the Southern Netherlands experienced an "Indian summer", pouring out tapestries, paintings, sculptures, books and musical instruments. Both artistic regions have been studied extensively, but mostly from a strictly national perspective, as either "Flemish" or "Dutch" art. The aim of this conference is to explore the artistic dialogue between the Southern Netherlands and the Dutch Republic. Leading scholars from around the world will examine the differences and commonalities between both regions, and analyse their mutual relations. This approach underlines the importance of cross-border knowledge exchanges for growth and innovation in the creative industries during the Golden Age.
