Tate
Research Department
Millbank, London
Terra Foundation Research Fellow in American Art
Fixed term for three years (starting autumn 2014)
Salary: Up to £36,000 p.a.
This prestigious Research Fellowship offers the chance to shape an innovative research programme for a world-class gallery.
The aim of Tate is to increase public awareness, understanding and enjoyment of British art from the 16th century to the present day, and of international modern and contemporary art.
Our Research Department leads and supports research activity in a wide range of subject areas. With the support of the Terra Foundation for American Art we are now undertaking an innovative programme of research into modern American art to 1980 as represented in the Tate collection, which includes work by artists such as Carl Andre, Bruce Nauman, Mark Rothko, Ed Ruscha, Andy Warhol and Francesca Woodman.
Reporting to the Head of Collection Research, you will have a vision of the academic issues and themes to be explored through this museum-based initiative, and will spearhead and manage the programme of research and online publication. You will research and write about individual works in Tate’s collection as part of the new series of In Focus online projects, and, liaising with researchers in the UK and elsewhere, you will commission and edit writings by a range of other contributors. You will also organise workshops and an international conference, commission articles, and propose research-related displays at Tate.
You will be a dynamic, ambitious academic with an established research profile. You should have completed your doctorate in the field of modern American art history within the last five years and have an up-to-date knowledge of current scholarship. Excellent writing, editing and communication skills, together with a proven ability to lead academic initiatives, will be essential.
