Interstices: Aesthetic Spaces of Experience in the Arts

We often speak of aesthetic spaces of experience in the context of artistically created spatial situations whose aim is to facilitate aesthetic experiences that fall outside the traditional limits of a particular genre. Such aesthetic spaces of experience may be concrete configurations of physical space, or spaces that arise in the imagination: an art exhibition that operates with the dramatic means of film or theatre performance, for example, or a sound installation that uses music to manipulate the how and the when of our perception of space, or the scenes of a novel whose literary form reflects a certain architecture.

The object of the conference is to scrutinize the concept of the aesthetic space of experience in terms of its scope and viability for academic research and artistic practice. On the basis of concrete artistic works, we shall investigate the means with which aesthetic spaces of experience are created and evoked and the effects they are potentially able to produce. We shall thereby take into account the fact that aesthetic spaces of experience are, as a rule, tied to institutional framework conditions that determine their aesthetic production and reception.

The concept of the aesthetic space of experience – thus the premise of the conference – is particularly productive where it draws our attention to the area of tension that exists between co-ordinates and modes of action traditionally often viewed as polar opposites: for example between sensual experience and reflection, between reality and illusion, between presence and representation, and between distancing and immersion. In this sense, aesthetic spaces of experience are always determined in multiple ways; they evoke different types of space that overlap or compete with one another, and whose relevance emerges in their reciprocal relationship.

The discussion shall therefore focus on the interstices that arise at this juncture and in which supposedly contradictory elements meet and at the same time dissolve their own limits. The aim of the conference is to shape the concept of the aesthetic space of experience as an expression of the complexity that characterizes both the dissolution of artistic limits and the social environment to which the art works in question relate, and thus to establish it as a fruitful link and point of intersection for contemporary discourses amongst artists, art critics and scholars.

Zwischenräume: Ästhetische Erfahrungsräume in den Künsten

Von ästhetischen Erfahrungsräumen ist häufig die Rede, wenn es um künstlerisch hergestellte räumliche Situationen geht, die jenseits traditioneller Gattungsgrenzen auf die Hervorrufung ästhetischer Erfahrungen angelegt sind. Dies können konkrete physisch-räumliche Konfigurationen sein oder solche Räume, die in der Vorstellung entstehen: etwa eine Kunstausstellung, die mit den dramaturgischen Mitteln eines Films oder einer Theateraufführung operiert, eine Klanginstallation, welche die Raumwahrnehmung musikalisch lenkt und temporal organisiert, oder die Schauplätze eines Romans, dessen literarische Form eine bestimmte Architektur widerspiegelt.

Das Anliegen der Tagung ist, den Begriff des ästhetischen Erfahrungsraums auf seine Reichweite und Tragfähigkeit für die wissenschaftliche Forschung und die künstlerische Praxis hin zu überprüfen. Ausgehend von konkreten künstlerischen Arbeiten ist zu untersuchen, mit welchen Mitteln die Einrichtung und Evokation ästhetischer Erfahrungsräume geschieht und welche Effekte sie potenziell auszulösen vermögen. Dabei ist zu berücksichtigen, dass ästhetische Erfahrungs-räume in der Regel an institutionelle Rahmenbedingungen gebunden sind, die sie produktions- und rezeptionsästhetisch präfigurieren.

Der Begriff des ästhetischen Erfahrungsraums, so die Ausgangsthese der Tagung, ist insbeson-dere dann produktiv, wenn er das Spannungsfeld fokussiert, das sich zwischen – aus traditioneller Sicht oftmals – widersprüchlichen Koordinaten und Wirkungsweisen aufspannt: etwa zwischen sinnlichem Erleben und Reflexion, zwischen Wirklichkeit und Illusion, zwischen Präsenz und Repräsentation oder zwischen Immersion und Distanzierung. In diesem Sinne sind ästhetische Erfahrungsräume immer mehrfach determiniert, sie rufen unterschiedliche Raumtypen auf, die sich überlagern oder in Widerstreit treten und deren Relevanz in ihrem reziproken Verhältnis zutage tritt.

In der Diskussion soll es deshalb um die Zwischenräume gehen, die durch derartige Bezugs-verhältnisse entstehen, in denen sich vermeintlich unvereinbare Elemente verorten und zugleich entgrenzen. Ziel der Tagung ist, den Begriff des ästhetischen Erfahrungsraums als Ausdruck jener Komplexität zu konturieren, von denen die Entgrenzung der Künste, aber auch die soziale Lebenswelt, auf die sich die damit verbundenen Kunstwerke beziehen, gekennzeichnet sind und ihn somit als Bindeglied und Kreuzungspunkt der beteiligten künstlerischen, kunstkritischen und wissenschaftlichen Diskurse fruchtbar zu machen.
