Europa. Eine Fallgeschichte!

Das frühneuzeitliche Genre der Fallgeschichte basiert auf negativen Abweichungen: keine Medizin ohne Krankheit, keine Rechtswissenschaft ohne Verbrechen. Dies führt zu der für das Genre konstitutiven doppelten Semantik von Fall: Der Fall eines Menschen ist die Voraussetzung, ihn zum Gegenstand der Darstellung, zum Fall zu machen. Mit einem Blick auf die überquellende Literatur zu Europa lässt sich schnell feststellen: Europa ist ein Fall für die Fallgeschichte! Mythendefizit, demokratische Lücke, Euro-Krise – Europa existiert nurmehr im Modus des Falles.

Fallgeschichten besitzen aber auch eine propädeutische Funktion. Der individuellen Verfasstheit des verbürgten Falles werden verallgemeinerbare Züge zugeschrieben, wodurch der Fall zum Exempel wird. Damit erweist sich das Genre der Fallgeschichte als ausdrücklich zukunftsorientiert. Inwiefern der jeweilige Fall in eine beispielhafte Erzählung umgeschrieben wird, gibt also nicht nur über die Bewertung des Vorgefallenen Auskunft, sondern insbesondere auch über die Erwartung zukünftiger Vorfälle.

Im Schnittfeld von Dokumentation und Fiktion erfolgt die Rekonstruktion des je spezifischen, aber historisch verbürgten Falles im Wechselspiel von wissenschaftlicher Theoriebildung, lebensweltlicher Anschauung und künstlerischem Verfahren. Die exemplarische Bedeutung und die besondere Suggestionskraft eines Falles liegt also mitnichten allein in seiner Evidenz, sondern auch in seiner künstlerischen Gestaltung.

Mit der Fallgeschichte als Erkenntnismodell will der Sammelband den “Fall” Europa bzw. das Nachdenken über Europa aufhellen: Stimmt es, dass Europa ausschließlich in seiner defizitären Gestalt zum Fall wird, und wenn ja, warum ist dem so? Angenommen, die Geschichten über den Fall Europas seien entschieden zukunftsorientiert, auf welchen aktuellen Zügen Europas beruht dann diese Zukunft? Wenn Europa seine Suggestionskraft aus seiner künstlerischen Gestaltung bezieht, was sind dann seine Konstitutions-, Exklusions- und Stabilisierungsmechanismen, seine Repräsentationsformen und -effekte? Disziplinübergreifend fordern die Herausgeber herzlich zu Beiträgen auf, die sich dieser europäischen Fallgeschichte annehmen und sie in jeder Hinsicht kritisch untersuchen wollen. Eingeladen sind Aufsätze, die den gegenwärtigen Fall Europa besser zu verstehen und seine Zukunft neu zu sehen anregen.

Der Sammelband wird von Kerstin Stamm, Kunsthistorikerin, und Patrick Stoffel, Literaturwissenschaftler, herausgegeben und im Christian A. Bachmann Verlag (christian-bachmann.de) erscheinen. Abstracts von max. 3.000 Zeichen sowie eine Kurzvita sind bis zum 1. November 2013 an folgende E-Mail-Adresse erbeten: patrick.stoffel @ uni-bonn.de Eine Rückmeldung über die Aufnahme in den Band erfolgt bis Ende November 2013. Die ausgearbeiteten Beiträge von max. 30.000 Zeichen werden anschließend bis zum 15. April 2014 einzureichen sein, um den Band im Sommer 2014 zu publizieren. Ausdrücklich willkommen sind alle europäischen Sprachen. Eine begleitende Übersetzung von Aufsatz und/oder Abstract in eine der Verkehrssprachen ist in Erwägung.

Europe. A case study!

The early modern genre of the case study is based on negative deviations: no medicine without disease, no law without crime. This leads to the genre’s constitutive double semantics of the “case”: The downfall of a man is the requirement to make him the subject of a representation of the event – to make him a case. Looking at the overflowing literature on Europe it quickly becomes clear: Europe is a case of a case study! Lack of myths, democratic gap, Euro-crisis – Europe appears to exist only as a “case”.

Yet case studies fulfill at the same time a preparatory function. To the constitution of the particular case, general qualities are ascribed to, so the case becomes an example. Thus, the genre of the case study turns out to be explicitly future oriented. To what extent the particular case transforms into an exemplary narrative, therefore reveals not only the evaluation of what happened, but also the expectation of future incidents.

At the intersection of documentation and fiction, the reconstruction of each specific but historically authentic case takes place in the interplay between development of scientific theory, perception of life and artistic expression. Its exemplary significance, the suggestive power of a case lies therefore by no means alone in its evidence, but also in its artistic representation.

With the case study as a heuristic model, the volume seeks to shed light on the “case” of Europe and thinking about Europe: Is it true that Europe is only a case because of its “deviations”, and if yes, why is that so? Given that the stories about the case of Europe are decidedly future oriented, on what current qualities is Europe’s future being based? If Europe derives its suggestive power from its artistic representation, then what are the mechanisms of its constitution, exclusion and stabilization, its forms and effects of representation? Across all scientific disciplines, the editors call for contributions wanting to take charge of this European case, to study it critically in every aspect. Papers that stimulate understanding the present and re-visioning the future of the case of Europe are most welcome.

Kerstin Stamm and Patrick Stoffel, art historian and literary theorist, respectively, are editing the volume which will be published by Christian A. Bachmann (christian-bachmann.de). Abstracts not exceeding 3,000 characters and a short CV are to be send by 1 November 2013 to the following e-mail address: patrick.stoffel @ uni-bonn.de Feedback on the proposed papers’ inclusion in the volume will be given by the end of November 2013. The elaborated articles of 30,000 characters at the most will then have to be submitted by 15th April 2014 in order to publish the book in the summer. All European languages are welcome. An accompanying translation of the paper and / or abstract in one of the working languages is currently being considered.

Europa. Un caso di studio!

Il “caso di studio” come genere scientifico della prima età moderna si basa su differenze negative: nessuna medicina senza malattia, nessuna legge senza crimine. Questo porta alla semantica doppia del caso, che è costitutiva per questo genere: La “caduta” di un uomo è la premessa per fare di lui il soggetto di una rappresentazione dell’evento – per renderlo un caso. Basta un veloce sguardo alla sterminata letteratura sull’Europa per scoprire che: l'Europa è un caso di caso di studio! Mancanza di miti, deficit democratico, crisi dell’Euro – l’Europa sembra ormai esistere solo nella modalità del caso.

I casi di studio hanno però anche una funzione propedeutica. Alla costituzione del singolo caso vengono attribuite caratteristiche generalizzabili: è così che il caso diventa un esempio. Il genere del caso di studio è dunque esplicitamente orientato al futuro. La misura in cui il caso particolare diventa una narrazione esemplare rivela quindi non solo la valutazione dell’accaduto, ma soprattutto l’anticipazione di futuri incidenti.

Tra documentazione e finzione, la ricostruzione di ogni caso specifico, e comunque storicamente autentico, si svolge in un gioco tra lo sviluppo di una teoria scientifica, sguardo sulla vita e processo artistico. Il suo significato esemplare, il potere suggestivo del caso, resta quindi non solo nella sua evidenza, ma anche nella sua rappresentazione artistica.

Con il caso di studio come modello euristico, questo volume cerca di illustrare ulteriormente il “caso” Europa ovvero il pensare l’Europa: E' vero che l’Europa diventa solo un caso solo nei suoi aspetti deficitari, e se sì, perché è così? Dato che i casi di studio dell'Europa hanno una funzione decisamente proiettata al futuro, quali sono gli aspetti dell’attualità sui quali si basa questo futuro? Se il potere suggestivo dell'Europa risiede nella sua rappresentazione artistica, quali sono allora i meccanismi della sua costituzione, esclusione e stabilizzazione, quali sono le sue forme ed effetti di rappresentazione? Rivolgendosi esplicitamente a tutte le discipline scientifiche, i curatori sono lieti di accogliere contributi che si occupano di questo caso europeo, proponendone uno studio critico sotto ogni aspetto. Sono benaccetti saggi che stimolano ripensare il caso Europa nel presente e a ri-vedere il suo futuro.
