Issue No. 77 of FKW // Zeitschrift für Geschlechterforschung und visuelle Kultur is dedicated to artists’ publications as independent media of artistic practice. Especially since the 1950s, artists worldwide have been experimenting with these often mobile, reproducible, and comparatively affordable formats. However, in comparison to canonical art forms such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, or architecture, artists’ publications have received and continue to receive relatively little research attention. On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Research Association Artists' Publications, which has been dedicated to foundational research in the field since its inception, an international conference was held in Bremen in 2024. Its goal was to bring together current research perspectives on artists’ publications by both established and emerging scholars. The focus was particularly on the critical potential inherent in artistic publishing. Under the title To Be Seen, Heard, Read: Artistic Publishing as Critical Art Practice, this issue gathers the revised contributions from the conference.
