Stipendien der Anna Polke-Stiftung 2026.

Ausschreibung:

Die Anna Polke-Stiftung schreibt zwei Stipendien mit einer Fördersumme von jeweils 5.000 € aus. Gefördert werden Forschungsprojekte von Wissenschaftler*innen der Kunstgeschichte oder benachbarter Disziplinen, die Aspekte von Sigmar Polkes Schaffen aus aktuell relevanten Fragestellungen heraus neu betrachten. Willkommen sind Projektvorschläge, die das Werk Polkes konkret adressieren oder es als eine von mehreren künstlerischen Positionen einbeziehen. Wir laden ausdrücklich Nachwuchs-Wissenschaftler*innen (Studierende, Absolvent*innen) ein, sich zu bewerben.

Schwerpunkt: Sigmar Polke. Athanor NOW

In diesem Jahr laden wir darüber hinaus besonders dazu ein, sich mit Forschungsvorhaben zu bewerben, die thematisch an das von der Anna Polke-Stiftung initiierte Projekt Sigmar Polke. Athanor NOW (2026) anknüpfen. Ausgangspunkt ist Sigmar Polkes vielbeachtete Athanor-Installation im Deutschen Pavillon der XLII. Biennale di Venezia 1986. Vierzig Jahre später werden ausgehend von aktuellen Diskursen neue Perspektiven auf Polkes Werk entwickelt. Das Projekt ist dezentral und interdisziplinär angelegt und wird mit Kooperationspartner*innen aus Wissenschaft und Praxis umgesetzt. Sigmar Polke. Athanor NOW greift zentrale Aspekte der historischen Werkkonstellation auf, verknüpft sie mit gegenwärtigen Fragestellungen und zielt darauf ab, Polkes Biennale-Beitrag als besonderes Werkensemble zu reflektieren sowie dessen transformatives, materialästhetisches, ökologisches und politisches Potenzial von Materialien, Medien und Kontexten zu untersuchen.
Bewerbungen mit Forschungsvorhaben, die von im Zusammenhang mit Athanor aufgeworfenen Fragen ausgehen und diese aus heutiger Perspektive weiterdenken, sind daher ausdrücklich willkommen.

Wir rufen zudem explizit dazu auf, sich folgendem Forschungsdesiderat zu widmen:

Der Konzeption und Einrichtung von Polkes Werkensemble im Deutschen Pavillon ging eine Exploration des leeren Raumes mit der Kamera voraus. Mehrfachbelichtungen, Überlagerungen des einfallenden Lichts, der Architektur des Pavillons und ihrer Details sowie Spuren der experimentellen Prozesse im Entwicklerbad zeugen in den hierbei entstandenen Fotografien von einer unter Polkes forschendem Blick vollzogenen Verwandlung des Raumes in malerische Substanz. Zugleich handelt es sich um eigenständige, unikale Werke, die im Kontext von Polkes fotografischem Schaffen sowie seines unkonventionellen Umgangs mit chemischen Prozessen und Verfahren der Bildproduktion im Medium Fotografie zu betrachten sind.

Von den Biennale-Fotografien Sigmar Polkes – von denen zunächst einige im die venezianische Ausstellung begleitenden Katalog bzw. Künstlerbuch publiziert wurden und anschließend vierzig unikale Fotografien als Jahresgabe über den Museumsverein des Museum Abteiberg Mönchengladbach vertrieben wurden – fehlt bislang eine umfassende Dokumentation. Vorschläge, die sich einer Bestandaufnahme dieser Fotografien sowie einer Kontextualisierung und Reflexion ausgewählter Aspekte widmen wollen, sind daher besonders erwünscht.

Die Stipendien

Die Fördersumme in Höhe von je 5.000 € kann – je nach Projektvorschlag, Qualifikation und Lebenssituation der Antragsteller*innen – flexibel eingeteilt werden. Die Antragsteller*innen sind gebeten, ergänzend zu ihrem Arbeitsplan Angaben zur vorgesehenen Mittelverwendung (ggf. in Form eines Kostenplans) einzureichen. Bewilligte Mittel müssen noch 2026 abgerufen werden. Die Auswahl der geförderten Projekte trifft eine Fachkommission.

Die Ergebnisse aus dem geförderten Forschungsvorhaben sollen durch die Stipendiat*innen im Rahmen einer öffentlichen Präsentation – als Vortrag, Gespräch oder in vergleichbarem Format – vorgestellt werden. Die Anna Polke-Stiftung ist zudem daran interessiert, die Forschungsergebnisse ausgewählter Projekte zu publizieren. Ein Anspruch auf Veröffentlichung besteht jedoch nicht.

Anna Polke Foundation Scholarships 2026

Call for Applications

The Anna Polke Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of two scholarships of €5,000 each. Supported research projects include those by scholars in the field of art history or related disciplines that reevaluate aspects of Sigmar Polke’s oeuvre from a relevant contemporary perspective. We invite proposals that explicitly and concretely explore Polke’s multifaceted body of work or include it as one of several artistic positions within the discourse of the chosen research question. Early-career researchers (students and recent graduates) are explicitly encouraged to apply.

Focus: Sigmar Polke: Athanor NOW

This year, we particularly encourage applications for research projects that are thematically linked to the internation, interdisciplinary, and decentralized project Sigmar Polke: Athanor NOW (2026) initiated by the Anna Polke Foundation. Taking Sigmar Polke’s celebrated Athanor installation in the German Pavilion at the XLII Venice Biennale in 1986 as a starting point, the project aims to develop new perspectives on Polke’s work based current discourses.

Sigmar Polke: Athanor NOW takes up diverse aspects of this historical constellation of works and links them to our present. The aim of the project is to reflect on Sigmar Polke‘s contribution to the Biennale as a unique ensemble of works and to examine the inherent transformative, material aesthetic, ecological, and political potential of materials, media, and contexts. Applications with research proposals relating to questions raised in connection with Athanor from a contemporary perspective are therefore especially welcome.

We also explicitly invite project proposals addressing the following research desideratum:

The conception and installation of Polke’s work ensemble at the German Pavilion were preceded by a photographic exploration of the empty space. Multiple exposures, overlays of incoming light, the pavilion’s architecture and details, as well as traces of experimental processes in the developer bath, reveal in the resulting photographs a transformation of space into painterly substance under Polke’s investigative gaze. Alongside this, these photographs constitute independent, unique works that should be considered within the context of Polke’s photographic practice and his unconventional engagement with chemical processes and image production techniques in photography.
A comprehensive documentation of Polke’s Biennale photographs—some initially published in the catalog and artist book of the Venice exhibition, and later forty unique photographs distributed by the Museum Abteiberg Mönchengladbach’s museum association—has not yet been compiled. Proposals aiming to catalogue these photographs, contextualize them, and reflect on selected aspects are therefore particularly encouraged.

Scholarships

Two scholarships will be awarded, each worth €5,000. The division of the funding amount can be flexible depending on the applicant’s qualifications as well as their living situation and the nature of their project proposal. Applicants are therefore requested to submit, in addition to their work schedule, a list of the desired use of funds (cost calculation). Approved funds must be used in 2026. The selection of the funded projects is made by an expert commission.

The results of the funded research project are to be presented by the scholars within a public presentation—as a lecture, discussion, or in another comparable format. The Anna Polke Foundation is interested in publishing the results of selected projects. However, there is no claim to publication.
