2 LACMA Scholars-in-Residency for Viennese Art, Rifkind Center L.A.

LACMA Scholars-in-Residency for Viennese Art at the Rifkind Center for German Expressionist Studies, Los Angeles, CA 90036.

On occasion of its multi-year acquisition of the Kallir Family Collection, begun by the venerated émigré scholar and dealer Otto Kallir at his Neue Galerie in Vienna in 1923 and continued at New York’s Galerie St. Etienne, the Rifkind Center for German Expressionist Studies at LACMA has announced Scholars-in-Residence for Viennese Art. In addition, the Rifkind Center continues its Scholars-in-Residence Program for study of its collection of Expressionist art and dedicated library of primary and secondary literature.

1. Rifkind Scholar-in-Residence Program:

The Robert Gore Rifkind Foundation funds a Scholar-in-Residence program, giving individuals the opportunity to conduct full-time research in the Rifkind Center for a period of one to two weeks. A fixed stipend is provided to help cover the costs of travel, accommodations, and living expenses over the course of the residency.

Applicants need to complete an application form and provide a current C.V. and a project description of up to 500 words. The project description should describe in detail which Rifkind Center resources are relevant to the research project. Works in the Rifkind Center collection can be searched using LACMA’s Collection Online database. Many of our rare books and periodicals, as well as the complete contents of our library can be searched in the Library Catalog.

The program is open to museum professionals, holders of master's or doctoral degrees, Ph.D. candidates, and individuals with a record of professional achievement in relevant fields. Scholars from outside of the U.S. are encouraged to apply. 

Application deadlines are October 31, 2026 and March 31, 2026 for spring/summer and fall/winter residencies, respectively. If you have any questions about the program, please email rifkindlacma.org.

2. The Kallir Family Scholar-in-Residence for Viennese Art at the Rifkind Center:

The Kallir Family in memory of Otto Kallir has initiated a Scholar-in-Residence program devoted to Viennese art at the Rifkind Center for German Expressionist Studies. This residency is intended for scholars focused on the Secessionist, Expressionist, and allied tendencies in Viennese art in anticipation of an exhibition on the subject tentatively scheduled for 2030 and provides the opportunity to conduct full-time research in the Rifkind Center for a period determined by the needs of each proposal. A fixed stipend is provided to help cover the costs of travel, accommodation, and living expenses over the course of the residency.
