Doctoral and Postdoctoral Positions (M/F/D) in the Minerva Fast Track Group "Architectures of Finance", Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max Planck Institute (Florence, Italy).

The Minerva Fast Track Group “Architectures of Finance,” headed by Dr. Eva Schreiner within the department of Prof. Dr. Gerhard Wolf at the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz – Max Planck Institute, seeks to appoint one Doctoral and one Postdoctoral Position (M/F/D).

Deadline: November 27, 2025, 6 pm CET.

The Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florenz, founded in 1897, has since 2002 been one of currently 85 institutes of the Max Planck Society, Germany's most important research organisation for basic research. The KHI’s research focuses on the history of art and architecture from a transcultural perspective.

The candidates will each conduct their own research within the framework of the Minerva Fast Track Group Architectures of Finance. Excellence in research, commitment to pursue new insights through original scholarship, and willingness to become a constructive and committed part of a group of international scholars are essential. The candidates will participate in the group’s activities and intellectual life of the KHI. They are invited to plan and organize workshops, visits, or other activities in collaboration with other fellows at the KHI.

The doctoral position is intended for a doctoral student enrolled at any university worldwide. The postdoctoral position is intended for an early-career researcher as one of their first positions after defending their dissertation. Both positions are residential. The positions may not be held concurrently with another employment or major fellowship award.

We welcome applications from doctoral students and postdoctoral researchers in every field within architecture, arts and the humanities with focus on the research group’s themes, and preference is given to projects going beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. What is important is the quality and originality of the project proposal. Candidates must be conversant in English at an appropriate level for scientific exchange.

The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from those currently under-represented in academia. The application is open to candidates of all nationalities.

Salary and benefits will be determined according to either a German or Italian contract, which is subject to the respective tax and social security laws. Selected candidates enjoy all the privileges of the institute, including library access, access to the Photothek, and their own carrel or desk.

Candidates should propose a funding period of desired length ranging from several months up to three years. The earliest possible starting date is February 2026.

To apply the candidates must upload the following documents as PDF files to the application portal (https://apply.khi.fi.it/60a2409e-0c11-4d4f-9ea8-d8e004922429/details):

- Cover letter that clearly states the candidate’s contribution to the Minerva Fast Track Group’s objectives and indication of desired length of period and starting date
- Description of proposed research project (max. 1000 words), accompanied by a short bibliography
- Curriculum vitae with list of publications (including those forthcoming, under revision, submitted, or in preparation)
- One reference letter (If it is confidential, it may also be sent directly to eva.schreinerkhi.fi.it. The letter for the doctoral candidate should come from their advisor.)

Interviews will be held virtually in December 2025.
