I am seeking contributions to a new edited volume under development with Routledge. Modeled on the anthologies Art History and Its Institutions (Routledge, 2007) and Making Art History (Routledge, 2011), the new volume is tentatively titled Inside Out: Art History and Its Institutions.
Scholars of visual culture globally are working in the midst of institutional reorientations that are repositioning art historical practice to align with new political, cultural, and economic exigencies. The first quarter of the 21st century has been, in many ways, transformative for the discipline of art history. During this same period, however, some disciplinary practices and professional positions have been suppressed or have disappeared altogether. Key drivers of these changes are the formal and informal institutions that give shape to art history as a distinct social, intellectual, and material practice. The volume is intended as a forum for critical and historical analysis of these conditions. Among other topics, proposals that address art history’s institutions and institutional practices as they affect disciplinary methods, discourse, research, ethics and values, and professional prospects are sought.
Those interested in contributing are invited to submit abstracts of 200 – 300 words describing the ca. 5,000-word, previously unpublished contribution they would make to the volume by November 1, 2025. Proposals for single-author essays are welcome, as are texts that take a different form (e.g., multi-author essays, interviews, roundtables, etc.). The proposed volume will include a mix of invited contributions and contributions resulting from this open call. Up to ten contributions will be selected from the proposals received from this open call. Notifications of acceptance will be sent by December 1. Proposals as well as queries may be sent to Elizabeth Mansfield, ecm289psu.edu.
