Belvedere Research Journal, New Issue

Deadline: Oct 31, 2025

Dr. Christian Huemer

The Belvedere Research Journal (BRJ), a peer-reviewed, open-access e-journal, invites submissions for its next issue. The BRJ publishes original and innovative scholarship on the art history and visual culture of Central Europe, from the medieval period to the present.

Founded in 2023, the journal is dedicated to promoting research on Central European art and culture beyond national borders and languages. We particularly welcome contributions that situate Central European and Austrian art practices within a broader global framework and promote transdisciplinary methodological approaches. We especially encourage submissions that challenge established narratives, explore transnational and transcultural exchanges, highlight the intercultural dynamics of the art world, and shed light on historically underrepresented perspectives.

Publication Formats:
The Research Articles are argument-driven contributions that shed new light on the art and visual culture of Central Europe, broadly defined. They undergo double-anonymous peer-review and range between 20,000 and 50,000 characters in length (incl. spaces).
Discoveries present new findings from primary sources or fresh interpretations of individual artworks from the region. These contributions are reviewed editorially for faster publication, and are limited to 15,000 characters (incl. spaces).

Accepted articles are published in an open annual issue as soon as they have completed the review process and are ready for publication. There are no article processing charges. For authors writing in Central European languages, the BRJ arranges professional translations of accepted manuscripts. All articles also receive professional copy-editing, and the journal handles the acquisition of image rights. Published articles appear under the Creative Commons CC BY 4.0 license, with copyright retained by the author(s).

We encourage submissions from both established scholars and early career researchers, including PhD candidates.
