De lo morisco a lo turquesco. Releer, resignificar o reutilizar el legado islámico en la Monarquía Hispánica.

Los miembros del proyecto I+D La construcción del imaginario turquesco en la cultura visual iberoamericana de la Edad Moderna (PID2022-138382NB-I00), coordinado desde el Departamento de Patrimonio Artístico y Documental de la Universidad de León, y las/os investigadoras/es del Instituto de Humanismo y Tradición Clásica y Tradición Clásica de la Universidad de León, invitamos a cualquier estudioso/a de la historia, historia del arte, estudios literarios y culturales, conservación-restauración, musicología o cualquier otra disciplina afín, a participar en esta reunión científica que acogerá la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de León y que tiene por objeto discutir:

- Cómo fue reutilizado el legado islámico, en especial su cultura material —en el mundo hispánico y con perspectiva de larga duración—, prestando atención tanto a los agentes culturales como a los receptores de la sociedad en general; y cómo se integró dentro de los gustos estéticos con fines representativos.
- Cómo releer la imagen del “otro” en el proceso histórico de formación del imaginario de la mal llamada Reconquista, y, en general, en el contexto de los conflictos entre la cristiandad ibérica y el islam.
- Cómo se resignificaron las manufacturas y textiles del mundo islámico, frecuentemente asociados a la industria de lujo, en las colecciones creadas en contexto ya religioso ya profano, o la resemantización de la “ropa morisca” o el “hábito turquesco” en espacios festivos y teatrales.
- Cómo releer la alteridad desde la materialidad de los objetos artísticos, cómo reevaluar las restauraciones, cambios o modificaciones que son parte de la historia material de dichos objetos, desde un estudio atento de sus dimensiones formales, técnicas o materiales.
- Cómo fue reutilizada la cultura material de los pueblos musulmanes, lejanos o cercanos, en manifestaciones efímeras o performativas; y cómo en ocasiones los objetos se resignificaron en manos de unas élites que generalmente se relacionaban con intercambios materiales significativos, como eran los regalos diplomáticos.
- Cómo releer el “miedo a los turcos”, en la cultura visual y el imaginario hispánicos como parte de la confrontación entre el cristianismo y el islam; o su progresiva superación desde principios del XVIII en adelante, con la proliferación de motivos turquescos en fiestas públicas, muebles u otros objetos de las artes decorativas.

Fechas importantes: recepción de comunicaciones, hasta 15 de junio (incluido); comunicado de aceptación, antes del 25 de julio.

Idiomas: se aceptan comunicaciones en castellano (u otras lenguas cooficiales en España), en portugués y en inglés.
Modalidad de participación: El congreso se celebrará presencialmente, pero se permitirá excepcionalmente la participación virtual a quienes residan fuera de la Unión Europea.

From the Moresque to Turquesque Styles

The members of the research project La construcción del imaginario turquesco en la cultura visual iberoamericana de la Edad Moderna (PID2022-138382NB-I00), coordinated by the Departamento de Patrimonio Artístico y Documental of the Universidad de León, and the researchers of the Instituto de Humanismo y Tradición Clásica of the same university, we invite any scholar of history, art history, literary and cultural studies, conservation-restoration, musicology or any other related discipline, to participate in this scientific conference that will be hosted by the Faculta de Filosofía y Letras of the Universidad de León and that aims to discuss:

- How the Islamic legacy was reused, especially its material culture -in the Hispanic world and with a long-term perspective-, paying attention to both the cultural agents and the receivers of the society in general; and how it was integrated within the aesthetic tastes with representative purposes.
- How to reread the image of the “other” in the historical process of the formation of the imaginary of the misnamed Reconquest, and, in general, in the context of the conflicts between Iberian Christianity and Islam.
- How the manufactures and textiles of the Islamic world, often associated with the luxury industry, were re-signified in the collections created in both religious and profane contexts, or the re-semanticization of “Moorish clothing” or the “Turkish habit” in festive and theatrical spaces.
- How to reread otherness from the materiality of artistic objects, how to reevaluate the restorations, changes or modifications that are part of the material history of these objects, from an attentive study of their formal, technical or material dimensions.
- How the material culture of the Muslim peoples, distant or nearby, was reused in ephemeral or performative manifestations; and how on occasions the objects were given new meaning in the hands of elites that were generally related to significant material exchanges, such as diplomatic gifts.
- How to reread the “fear of the Turks” in the Hispanic visual culture and imaginary as part of the confrontation between Christianity and Islam; or its progressive overcoming from the early eighteenth century onwards, with the proliferation of Turkish motifs in public festivities, furniture or other objects of the decorative arts.

Deadline: reception of abstracts until June 15 (included); notification of acceptance before July 25.

Languages: papers are accepted in Spanish (or other co-official languages in Spain), Portuguese and English.

Mode of participation: The congress will be held in person, but virtual participation will be exceptionally allowed for those residing outside the European Union.
