PostDoc Research Fellowship, South African Art & Visual Culture, Johannesburg

University of Johannesburg, Johannesburg, South Africa
Bewerbungsschluss: 31.08.2024

Brenda Schmahmann, University of Johannesburg

Postdoctoral Research Fellowship with the SARChI Chair in South African Art and Visual Culture.

I am seeking to appoint one or more postdoctoral research fellows to work with me for a period of between one and three years. A successful applicant will take up a fellowship as soon as possible and by no later than the beginning of 2025.

Envisaged research should focus on South African topics (or topics pertinent to South Africa) that fall broadly within at least one of the following three rubrics: Gender and Visual Culture; Public Art and Curating; Art and Design in the Context of Community Projects. In defining their envisaged work, candidates are encouraged to focus primarily on the writing of articles for refereed journals.

Applicants must have obtained their doctoral degrees within the last five years. An applicant completing a PhD should please note that they can only take up this position when notified officially of receipt of a PhD and not while it is still under examination.

Fellows are paid a non-taxable allowance of ZAR 250 000 per annum and some further financial support is provided for conference attendance, conference costs and fieldwork. If appointed as an NRF postdoctoral fellow, the allowance is higher than this. As the fellowship is principally to enable a PDRF to focus on research, the fellowship holder may not hold full-time salaried employment concurrently with the fellowship, but he/she will be allowed to undertake up to twelve hours per week of additional work.

While visits elsewhere for field studies and conferences are acceptable and envisaged, a successful incumbent will be expected to be based in Johannesburg.

Research productivity and proven capacity is the primary criterion that will be considered.

If you are interested in and eligible for this position, please contact me at brendasuj.ac.za for an application form. Applications must reach me by 31 August 2024.
