Women and Museum Giving Culture (Rotterdam, 6 Jun 24)

Rotterdam, 06.06.2024
Anmeldeschluss: 06.06.2024

Bram Donders

The symposium is part of research funded by the NWO Museum Grant, through which Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen investigates the role of female patrons of the museum over 175 years. This research has identified over five hundred individual women who have donated to the museum’s collection in various ways, ranging from everyday objects to canonical paintings, such as Wassily Kandinsky's Lyrisches (1911).

During the symposium, speakers from various disciplines, institutions, and museums will share their expertise. Keynote speaker Professor Dr. Helleke van den Braber (Utrecht University) will discuss the motivations behind donating to museums. Drawing from her doctoral research, Mariëlle Ekkelenkamp (University of Amsterdam) will elaborate on how different women (with or without a spouse) managed to donate money or artworks to public museum collections through the mediation of the Rembrandt Association. Dorine Maat (Amsterdam Museum), who also received an NWO Museum Grant, will share her findings on the collection and legacy of Sophia Lopez Suasso-de Bruijn to the subsequently established Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Bram Donders (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen) will present the results of his research on female donors to Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
