Cultural Relations between Fascist Italy and Latin America from the 1920s to the 1940s.

The Cultural Secretariat of the IILA - International Italo-Latin American Organisation, opens the call for participation in the 6th issue of the journal "Quaderni Culturali IILA" - 2024.

In 1999, the IILA dedicated an exhibition to the painter Giulio Aristide Sartorio, who was the
artistic commissioner of the exhibition transported by the 'Regia Nave Italia' during its
voyage to Latin America, the centenary of which falls in 2024. The ship, laden with Italian
industrial and artistic products, touched down in almost all the countries of the continent,
and bears witness to how the Italian government of the time saw in this initiative an
opportunity to deepen relations with the governments of those territories and with the Italian
communities that had emigrated to Latin America, as well as to boost trade.
This trip was, however, just one of many initiatives, both public and private, that created
bridges of communication and exchange between Italian culture and Latin America across
all fields of knowledge and artistic endeavour.
The proposed monographic issue of Quaderni Culturali IILA seeks to investigate the artistic,
literary and intellectual exchanges between the Italian peninsula and the Latin American
continent through the inter-textual and inter-artistic relationship between works and authors
in the decades between 1920 and 1940. It will follow a rich tradition of studies, and will
accept proposals on artistic legacies and on the various forms of dialogue between texts
and authors, as well as the systemic dimension of transatlantic links. For this reason,
analysis of the textual dimension of the proposed works will continue, but the contextual
level will also be examined, focusing on the figure of agents, intermediaries, translators and
publishers, without forgetting the cultural policies, studies on public reception and editorial
trends.
The 'triangulation' between Spain, Italy and Latin America is also relevant, whilst not
forgetting other hubs of creation and the spread of transatlantic relations in Europe,
particularly Portugal and Brazil, and their relationship with the Latin American and Italian
context. In this way, the aim is to broaden research into European and American networks
of literary and cultural production, dissemination and importation.

Another aspect to be explored is the presence of migrant and exophonic writing and art
forms, in order to emphasise the intersection between literary and artistic contributions that
facilitated the production of new artistic and textual forms in those years, in particular those
linked to the avant-garde.

The proposed areas of research are the following:
- Travel literature: from Europe to Latin America and back.
- Cross-cultural perspectives and the construction of stereotypes.
- Latin American nations and their cultural correspondents in Spain, Italy and Portugal.
- Cultural relations between Italy, Spain, Portugal and Latin America between 1920
and 1940: literary works, events, and places.
- Transatlantic feminist relations. Proposals for studying intellectual and artistic
networks from a gender perspective.
- Exile, cosmopolitanism and migration from 1920 to 1940.
- Publishers, translators and intermediaries. Dissemination and circulation of Latin
American culture in Europe.
- Influences, exchanges and interdisciplinary hybridisation in art, music, literature and
filmmaking.
- Writing in the language of the other: self-translations and exophonic writing.
- Transatlantic relations and archives.

Articles of no more than 5,000 to 7,000 words shall be submitted by June, 1, 2024. The

Las relaciones culturales entre italia y américa latina entre los años 20 y 40 del siglo xx.

La Secretaría Cultural de la IILA - Organización Internacional Ítalo-Latino Americana, abre
la convocatoria para participar en el número 6 de la revista “Quaderni Culturali IILA” – 2024.

En 1999, la IILA dedicó una exposición al pintor Giulio Aristide Sartorio, comisario artístico
de la muestra transportada por la "Regia Nave Italia" durante su viaje a América Latina,
cuyo centenario se celebra en 2024. La nave, cargada de productos industriales y artísticos
italianos, recaló en casi todos los países del continente, y da testimonio de cómo el gobierno
italiano de la época vio en esta iniciativa una oportunidad para profundizar las relaciones
con los gobiernos de aquellos territorios y con las comunidades italianas que habían
emigrado a América Latina, así como para impulsar el comercio.
Ese viaje fue sin embargo solo una de las múltiples iniciativas -oficiales y privadas- que
crearon puentes de comunicación y de intercambio entre la cultura italiana y América Latina
en todos los campos del saber y de la creación artística.
El número monográfico de Quaderni del IILA que proponemos quiere investigar los
intercambios artísticos, literarios e intelectuales entre la península italiana y el continente
latinoamericano a través de la relación intertextual e interartística entre obras y autores en
las décadas entre 1920 y 1940. Siguiendo una rica tradición de estudios, se aceptarán
propuestas sobre los legados artísticos y las múltiples formas de diálogo entre textos y
autores, por un lado, así como la dimensión sistémica de los vínculos transatlánticos. Por
esto, se seguirá analizando la dimensión textual de las obras propuestas, pero también el
nivel contextual, enfocándose en la figura de agentes, mediadores, traductores y editores,
sin olvidar las políticas culturales, los estudios sobre recepción y tendencias editoriales.
Se considera relevante también la “triangulación” entre España, Italia y América Latina, sin
dejar de lado otros polos de creación y difusión de las relaciones transatlánticas en Europa,
sobre todo considerando a Portugal y Brasil, y su relación con la realidad
hispanoamericana e italiana. De esta forma, se quiere ampliar la investigación acerca de
las redes europeas y americanas de producción, difusión e importación literaria y cultural.

Otro aspecto que se quiere investigar es la presencia de escrituras y formas artísticas migrantes y exofónicas, para enfatizar el cruce interdisciplinario entre aportaciones literarias y artísticas que facilitan en esos años la producción de nuevos formatos artísticos y textuales, ligados en particular a las vanguardias.
Las líneas de investigación propuestas son las siguientes:
- Literatura de viaje: desde Europa a América Latina y viceversa.
- Miradas interculturales y construcción de estereotipos.
- Los Estados latinoamericanos y sus corresponsales culturales en España, Italia y Portugal.
- Relaciones transatlánticas feministas. Propuestas de estudio sobre redes intelectuales y artísticas a partir de un enfoque de género.
- Exilio, cosmopolitismo y migraciones entre 1920 y 1940
- Editores, traductores y mediadores. Difusión y circulación de la cultura latinoamericana en Europa.
- Influencias, intercambios e hibridación transdisciplinar, en el arte, la música, la literatura y el cine.
- Escribir en la lengua del otro: autotraducciones y escrituras exofónicas.
- Las relaciones transatlánticas y sus archivos.
