Dr Nicola Jennings

The Colnaghi Foundation and Athena Art Foundation in London are delighted to announce a symposium on 26 September 2024 about the art of Viceregal Latin America in the period from 1550 to 1900. The symposium will be hosted both online and in Colnaghi Gallery in London (although no travel grants are available). Papers can be given in Spanish or English, and a selection will be published in English in the Spring 2025 issue of the peer reviewed Colnaghi Studies Journal (the foundation will be responsible for the translation of Spanish papers that are selected for publication in the journal).

The organisers invite contributions of 5,000 words in length highlighting new discoveries or current research on paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, metalwork, decorative arts and textiles, touching upon topics such as
• patronage;
• reception, appropriation and translation by indigenous and criollo artists;
• use and symbolism of local materials;
• trade routes such as the Manila Galleon;
• representation of race and gender, and production by women, indigenous peoples and slaves;
• the role of the Catholic Church and religious orders;
• conservation;
• the arrival of artworks and artists from Spain, and
• collecting practices in the Americas and Spain.

Those interested to take part are invited to submit a 500-word abstract in English or Spanish and 100-word bio by March 18th, 2024, via email to journalcolnaghi.com. The organisers will send out confirmations to successful participants by 1st May 2024. Authors of papers selected for publication will have three to four weeks to finalise their texts following the conference.
