"The Gazer and the Glaze: Postmodern Approaches to Early Modern Stained
Glass"

Paper Panel at Renaissance Society of America, Chicago, March 2024

This session invites proposals for papers that consider Early Modern
stained glass from postmodern theoretical perspectives, broadly speaking.
How can the rich plurality of contemporary art-historical
methodologies—especially those that ask how agency and power were
achieved through complex negotiations among various actors—shine new
light on stained glass, a medium with a rich history of theological and
liturgical implications? Case studies of specific sacred or secular glass
works, sites of stained-glass patronage, or artists who worked in the
medium are welcomed, as are presentations that foreground transdisciplinary
approaches to examples from the Early Modern period. Particularly
encouraged are papers focused on geographies outside of western Europe and
submissions from early career researchers.

Please send a proposal for 20-minute papers that include full name, current
affiliation, paper title (15-word maximum), paper abstract (200-word
maximum), CV, PhD or other terminal degree completion year (past or
expected), to Catharine Ingersoll, ingersollccvmi.edu, by 15 July 2023.
Applicants will be notified by 1 August 2023.
