Zweitägiger Workshop: Dora Hitz. Mit dem Alten um das Neue kämpfen / two-day workshop: Dora Hitz. Fighting with the old for the new

Die Malerin Dora Hitz (1853–1924) war um 1900 eine Schlüsselfigur der Berliner Kunstszene. Als „Vertreterin einer neuen Darstellungs- und Empfindungsweise“ (so W. Dietrich, in: Die Zukunft, 14, 1896) bestimmte sie Berlins Entwicklung hin zu internationalem Rang maßgeblich mit. Hitz war nicht nur Mitglied in avantgardistischen Künstler*innengruppen wie der Vereinigung der XI, sondern zählte auch neben Max Liebermann zu den Gründungsmitgliedern der Berliner Secession. Außerdem war Dora Hitz in ganz Europa vernetzt und Aufenthalte in Rumänien am Königshof, in Paris und in Italien prägten ihre künstlerische Ausdrucksweise. In der Zeit der Inflation und des Ersten Weltkriegs gerieten die Künstlerin und ihr Werk jedoch in Vergessenheit. Mit dem Workshop soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, wie die renommierte Künstlerin aus den Diskursen ihrer Zeit verschwinden konnte. Ein Teil der Antwort liegt vermutlich in den stilistischen Ambivalenzen begründet, welche ihr Schaffen kennzeichnen. Auch ihr Fokus auf ,weiblich‘ konnotierte Themen wie Mutter und Kind oder Frauen in der Natur könnte hierfür angeführt werden. Dora Hitz, die als Wegbereiterin der Avantgarde gelten kann, war es trotz allem nur begrenzt möglich, sich aus den gesellschaftlichen Zwängen der Zeit zu lösen. 1925 beschrieb der Journalist Fritz Schotthöfer die Künstlerin wie folgt:
„Dora Hitz [stand] in der ersten Reihe der Ringer, die mit dem Alten um das Neue kämpften […]“ (Fritz Schotthöfer: „Dora Hitz“, in: Der Bildereinrahmer und Vergolder, 11.1925, Nr. 5, 3. Februar 1925)
Im Rahmen des Workshops soll das Zusammentreffen von „Alt“ und „Neu“ in den Werken von Hitz untersucht und überlegt werden, wie diese Spannung die Rezeption ihrer Kunst beeinflusst hat.

Mögliche Themenschwerpunkte der Workshop-Beiträge können u. a. sein:

- Dora Hitz im Spiegel der Kunstschriftstellerei
- Alterität weiblicher Kunstschaffender
- „Weiblichkeit“ und „Männlichkeit“ als Themen in der Kunst um 1900

- der Garten als Sehnsuchtsort oder Utopie
- Darstellungen von Mutter und Kind
- stilistische Heterogenität und Stilpluralismus
- neue restauratorische Erkenntnisse

Der zweitägige Workshop findet als Teil des Rahmenprogramms der geplanten Ausstellung zum 100. Der Workshop wird organisiert von Prof. Dr. Claudia Blümle, Dorothea Douglas und Rahel Schrohe am Institut für Kunst- und Bildgeschichte der HU Berlin, in Kooperation mit Dr. Lucy Wasensteiner und Viktoria Krieger, Liebermann-Villa am Wannsee, und Dr. Sabine Meister, Bröhan-Museum.

The painter Dora Hitz (1853-1924) was a key figure in the Berlin art scene at the turn of the century. As an "envoy of a new mode of representation and sensibility" (according to W. Dietrich, in: Die Zukunft, 14, 1896), she played a decisive role in Berlin's development as an international centre of artistic production. Hitz was not only a member of avant-garde groups such as the Vereinigung der XI, but was also one of the founding members of the Berliner Secession, along with Max Liebermann. Additionally, Dora Hitz was part of the international art scene spanning Europe, with stays at the Romanian royal court, in Paris and in Florence shaping her oeuvre and expression. In the aftermath of the First World War and the subsequent economic decline, the artist and her work fell into oblivion. The workshop will explore how this renowned artist could disappear from the discourses of her time. A partial answer may lie in in the stylistic ambivalence which characterizes her work. Her inclination toward subjects with 'feminine' connotations, such as mother and child or women in nature, offer further potential insight. Dora Hitz, who may be considered a pioneer of the avant-garde, was only able to break free from the social constraints of her time to a limited extent. In 1925, the journalist Fritz Schotthöfer described the artist as follows:
"Dora Hitz [stood] in the first row of wrestlers who fought with the old for the new [...]" (Fritz Schotthöfer: „Dora Hitz“, in: Der Bildereinrahmer und Vergolder, 11.1925, No. 5, 3 February 1925)
The workshop will explore the clash between "old" and "new" in Hitz's work and consider how this tension influenced the reception of her art.
