The Getty Foundation, Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), and Universidad de los Andes (Uniandes, Bogotá), invite graduate students and junior scholars working in art history and related fields, and museum staff, to submit applications for the intergenerational research seminar "The Amazon Basin as Connecting Borderland." This seminar will bring together scholars from, or based in, South America and is composed of two intensive in-person convenings in Ecuador and Brazil, complemented by a series of virtual meetings exploring the visual and material culture of the Amazon in the early modern period.

The project will fund the participation of 18 scholars in the seminar, with the possibility of a second-year renewal. Participation in the traveling seminar will be fully funded. Additionally, two junior scholars (postdocs) will receive a small stipend related to specific teaching and research responsibilities within the project.

The Getty Foundation’s initiative Connecting Art Histories aims to strengthen art history globally by increasing opportunities for sustained intellectual exchange of scholars across nations and regions. The grant supports younger scholars in building their professional networks with peers and advanced researchers through immersive seminars and virtual convenings. In this iteration of the initiative, the participants will be graduate students and junior scholars (with Ph.D. completion no longer than three years before the application deadline) from or based in South America.

Participants with indigenous backgrounds and scholars working in the Amazon will be given special consideration.

The working languages will be Spanish and Portuguese, with readings in English, Spanish and Portuguese.
