Which processes and dynamics emerge, materialize and become visible in the encounter of dance and transculturality? We will research and discuss this central question in the Summer School T(r)anzkultur. Encounters of Dance and Transculturality from July 24-30, 2023, at the Heinrich-Heine-University Düsseldorf in coop-eration with the tanzhaus NRW and Sammlung Philara.
We are particularly interested in the manifold interconnections and contact zones which can be experienced between dance, transculturality and arthistory. For example, T(r)anzkultur negotiates transcultural perspectives on dance through methodological and theoretical concepts, such as cultural transfer, migration, and gender. Moreover, dance practices can constitute powerful instruments and initi-ate resistance and action for change in social and political conflict zones. Thereby, dance companies and educational institutions form a microcosm of transculturality and globalization. For they - in the sense of Homi Bhabha's 'third space' - are spaces of negotia-tion, interconnection, and hybrid forms of expression: It is in the medium of dance in which ideas of culturally diversified societies emerge.Throughout Summer School 2023, we will focus on urban and contemporary dance styles from the Middle East. Over the past few years, important and groundbreaking dance styles, movements, companies, and research approaches have come up in the urban scene of these regions, which have yet to be received in Europe.
The Summer School T(r)anzkultur will provide space for theory, (art-)history, and practice. International scholars, dancers, choreographers, and experts will contribute and discuss their current work and shape the program. Up to 20 students from the HHU will be able to participate academically and practically. Ten international doctoral/Ph.D. students will be able to present and discuss their research projects on dance, performance, related photographic and cinematic practices, and expressions with transculturality in a poster presentation of 10-15 minutes (in English) with international experts. Therefore we are inviting doctoral and Ph.D. students to send us an application in the form of an abstract of 300 words and a short C.V. by the 1st of April 2023 to: mbingo.itondouni-duesseldorf.de with the subject line CFP T(r)anzkultur 2023.
Please notice that travel and accommodation are at your own expense.
We look forward to your application.
