SURVEY PRACTICES AND LANDSCAPE PHOTOGRAPHY ACROSS THE GLOBE

Workshop and Public Evening Lecture by Dr. Erin Hyde Nolan (Bates College / Tufts University)
June 13–June 14, 2022
University of Zurich

In light of recent debates regarding travel bans, the tenets of citizenship, and global migration, landscape photographs warrant renewed attention, especially their status as relics of a colonial enterprise. Now more than ever, nineteenth-century survey photographs resonate as global practices used to describe topographical space. They visualize the desire to control, own, map as well as render and reproduce both the diversity and familiarity of the landscape, expanding geographical borders and shifting seemingly fixed technological, visual, and ideological value systems. Bound to notions of objectivity and hegemonic ownership, these images shaped territorial expansion and legitimized imperial politics in the name of (proto-)national identity.
This workshop seeks to expand the field of landscape photography and understand how the temporal and historical dynamics of place materialize through survey practices and land documentation. We want to consider the transnational and temporal dynamics of survey histories from the «majority world,» addressing the often-neglected narratives of photography beyond the borders of Europe and North America.
