Because of the continued uncertainty caused by the pandemic, the annual conference of the International Society for the Study of Surrealism (ISSS) will take place virtually on November 17–20, 2022. Building on the success of last year’s virtual conference, we envision a virtual, polycentric, multilingual, and multilayered conference that adheres to the ISSS’s mission establishing, maintaining, and expanding connections and networks of surrealism scholars, writers, and artists around the world and across disciplines and languages.

The ISSS will thus hold Surrealisms 2022 as a stream of panels that stretches into an all-day/all-night online conference marathon. True to the spirit of surrealism as a world movement without a single locus but with many local centers amplifying the message of collective activity “sans frontières,” Surrealisms 2022 calls upon the international membership of the ISSS for local action and global reach.

The ISSS program committee invites proposals from individuals and groups/organizations (whether formally or informally constituted) for this global event, which will take place online, around the world, and around the clock – across time zones – from 12:00 GMT on 17/11/2022 to 12:00 GMT on 20/11/2022.

The Surrealisms 2022 virtual worldwide conference will feature academic sessions and roundtables, as well as other online events such as workshops, readings, and film screenings. The ISSS aims to facilitate cross-disciplinary and inter-regional exchange by organizing events and creating channels of information worldwide. We seek to foster dialogues between practicing artists, writers, surrealists, and the scholarly community for whom surrealism (past and present) is a field of ongoing inquiry.

The ISSS program committee invites proposals for:

● Individual presentations (20 min)
● Traditional scholarly panels of 3–4 individual or co-authored presentations
● Roundtable discussions
● Panels with short presentations (5–10 min. each)
● Workshops on new collaborative projects
● Media-based creative work
● Other formats welcome

The events should be LIVE and will take place through the Ex-Ordo platform during the three-day conference marathon.

Please upload a proposal to isss2022.exordo.com no later than 1 August 2022. Proposals should include:

● Title of your proposed virtual event.
● Names, emails, and affiliations of leaders and/or known participants (note that all participants/audience members must be active ISSS members)
● Short bios of participants
● An abstract (250–300 words)
● For panels, in addition to individual abstracts, proposals should include an abstract for the whole panel
● Language or languages of proposed event (English, French, or Spanish)
● Time zones of the participants

Proposals will be peer-reviewed by the ISSS Programming Committee.
