Based remotely, in London or Sweden.
Flexible schedule. Remuneration dependent on experience.
We are looking for a passionate, smart and enthusiastic individual to help with research around the life and career of the internationally acclaimed Swedish artist, silversmith and designer Wiwen Nilsson.
Wiwen Nilsson (1897-1974) was an artist, silversmith, jeweller, and craftsman. He is regarded as one of the most important artists of his time working in the fields of jewellery, silver and design. Wiwen studied in Germany, Denmark and France and is mainly known for his objects created in silver with art deco, cubist, geometric shapes. Having made his debut at the Gothenburg Exhibition in 1923, he achieved his international breakthrough following the 1925 World Exhibition in Paris where he received the gold medal in celebration of his innovative modernist designs.
The likely candidate will be a recent graduate in Art History or Design History, well versed in detailed information gathering and be exceptionally good at pulling together a large array of material into an online archive.
The successful candidate should have good verbal, written and analytical skills as well as passion for art and art-related investigative work. They must also be able to work autonomously and flexibly, reporting to the project leaders with regular check-ins. Some prior experience or interest within the world of silver, jewellery or design would be an advantage but not a prerequisite. They must be fluent, reading, writing and speaking, in Swedish and English.
This research project is being led by Leslie Ramos, arts development specialist and director of ArtEater and Dr Flavia Frigeri, art historian and curator, executive editor of the forthcoming publication on Wiwen Nilsson.
Duties:
- Organise and categorise documents, photos and more within a digital archive.
- Create a system for indexing the archive within a secure digital environment allowing for future research.
- Work with relevant national and international archives to supplement archival information, creating summaries, and, where applicable, scan or otherwise work with institutional archives to obtain digital copies of archival materials.
- Help create a comprehensive list of worldwide collections/museums/institutions and other organisations currently holding works by the artist.
- Help create a bibliographic record of academic writing on the artist.
- Help analyse potential gaps within the archive, areas for improvement (for example, images of works of art, missing correspondence).
- Anything else related to the above deemed necessary to achieve a comprehensive academic overview of Wiwen Nilsson.
Although the archival material will be mostly in Swedish, we would like for all research results to be carried out in English.
