The Influence of the Vienna School of Art History III: Origins, Modifications and Influences of Its Theoretical Concepts
Institute of Art History, Czech Academy of Sciences, Prague, Czech Republic
19–20th April 2023
The third international conference held in Prague will open a question of theoretical concepts of the Vienna School of Art History in the field of art history, aesthetics, philosophy, cultural studies and other related discourses. The main focus of the conference are intellectual origins, modifications and influences of concepts and theories by members and pupils of the Vienna School of Art History as well as theories critically tackling the concepts coming from the Viennese art historical milieu. The papers can aim at the individual theories of the particular art historians creating or evolving from the Vienna School, they can deal with the question of the formulation of the Vienna School as a theoretical art historical school, they can research the problem of translations of the Viennese art historical theories into different languages, or they can deal with the critical response to the theories originating from the Viennese art historical school.
The main research topics of the conference thus are:
• Means and origins of theoretical concepts of the Vienna School of Art History
• Transformations of the Viennese art historical concepts in different cultural contexts
• Translations of the Viennese art theories and concepts and their impact outside the Vienna School of Art History
• Competitive theoretical concepts in comparison with the Viennese art historical theories
• Use and misuse of the Viennese art historical concepts in later art historical researches and related discourses
Papers on other topics that keep the focus of the conference are also welcomed. The languages of the conference will be German and English. The conference papers will be collected and published in the Journal of Art Historiography, as were the papers of the previous conferences held in 2019 and 2021 (see no. 21, 22, 23, 25 and 26).
