PhD Candidate (m/f/d) in Art History

We are looking for a PhD candidate to join the project “ArtVis - Dynamic Network Perspectives on Digital Art History” (https://www.cvast.tuwien.ac.at/projects/artvis). This interdisciplinary project, bridging between computer science (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Silvia Miksch, Vienna University of Technology, Institute of Visual Computing & Human-Centered Technology) and art history (Univ.-Prof. Dr. Raphael Rosenberg, University of Vienna), is financed by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF). The art history PhD candidate will focus on the history of European art and exhibitions between 1905 and 1915 as documented by the existing database DoME (https://exhibitions.univie.ac.at/) and cooperate with computer scientists in order to develop innovative approaches to network visualizations.

The three-year PhD position is fully funded (standard PhD student salary at the University of Vienna, B1, 75%, https://personalwesen.univie.ac.at/en/jobs-recruiting/job-center/salary-scheme/). The successful candidates will become part of the interdisciplinary team of the CReA lab (https://crea.univie.ac.at/), within the Department of Art History: one of the oldest and biggest centres for research and education in its field. The candidate will join a VDS (Vienna Doctoral School) of the University, have access to state-of-the-art facilities, and allowances for visiting conferences. The working language of our group is English, and we welcome students from all over the world.

Profile:
- Above-average master’s degree in art history or related field;
- Interest in digital art history;
- Dedication to interdisciplinary scientific research, independence, good cooperation skills, and team spirit;
- Proficient knowledge of English and at least basic command of German/willingness to learn German;
- Academic command of language – both in written and oral form.

Further desirable qualifications:
- Good computer skills;
- Experience in collaborating with computer scientists;
- Knowledge of one or more programming languages
