The NOVA FCSH announces a call for applications for a PhD Research Scholarship in the scope of the project "Curiositas: Peeping Before Virtual Reality. A Media Archaeology of Immersion Through VR and the Iberian Cosmoramas (PTDC/COM-OUT/4851/2021)", supported through national funds in the budget of the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) - and developed in the research unit IHA – Instituto de História da Arte (Institute of Art History).

Research fields: 
General: Arts and Humanities
Specific: Art History, Cultural Studies, Visual Culture

Researcher Profile: 
a) Archive/documental and visual research;
b) cataloguing experience;
c) research interests in historical visual media, and modern visual culture;
d) familiarity/experience in digital or artistic curating;
e) to be proficient, both orally and in writing, in Portuguese and in English (other languages like French or Spanish may also be a plus);
f) availability to start the contract shortly after the announcement of final results.

Supervision and activities to be developed: The guidance will be provided by the Principal Co-Investigators of the Project, and the PhD fellow will collaborate in research activities such as: historical press and image surveys in archives and museums, database filling and cataloguing, press analysis, curation of research data for a Virtual Reality platform and dissemination events (conferences, workshops, open courses and scientific contents for storytelling and curation of exhibitions).

Duration, scope and funding: The scholarship will have a duration of 36 months, without the possibility of renewal.

The amount of the grant is 1144,64€, in accordance with the table of values for grants awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the country (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores). The payment of voluntary social insurance is also foreseen.

Eligibility criteria: Applicants must meet the eligibility conditions set out in Articles 6 and 9 of the FCT I.P. Research Grant Regulations (2019) (https://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/docs/RegulamentoBolsasFCT2019.pdf).

Specific eligibility criteria are:
- BA Degree in Art History, Communication Sciences, Artistic Studies, or related cultural fields, with a minimum final score of 14/20;
- Active enrolment in a a PhD program in Art History, Artistic or Cultural Studies, Sciences of Communication, or closely related fields;
- Archive/documental research and, ideally, cataloguing experience;
- Research interests in historical visual media, and modern visual culture;
- Familiarity/experience in digital or artistic curating;
- to be proficient, both orally and in writing, in Portuguese and in English

Application submission: open until March 09, 2022. Applications must be submitted by email to bolsasihafcsh.unl.pt and susana.martinsfcsh.unl.pt , with the reference "BI IHA – Project CURIOSITAS - PTDC/COM-OUT/4851/2021" in the subject and by sending an application letter accompanied by the following documents:

1) Motivation Letter (max 2 pages);
2) Curriculum Vitae;
3) Documents proving that the candidate meets the required conditions for the type of scholarship to which he/she is applying for, namely qualification certificates with final average; proof of registration in a PhD program. In the case of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and in order to ensure the application of the principle of equal treatment to applicants holding foreign and national academic degrees, it is mandatory to recognize these degrees and convert the respective final classification to the Portuguese classification scale. The recognition of foreign degrees and diplomas and the conversion of the final classification into the Portuguese classification scale may be requested at any public higher education institution or at the Directorate-General for Higher Education (DGES, only in the case of automatic recognition). Regarding this matter, we suggest consulting the DGES portal at the following address: http://www.dges.gov.pt.; updated document proving the professional situation, indicating the nature of the contract and duties, which may be replaced by a sworn statement if there is no professional activity or provision of services;
4) Other documents considered relevant by the applicant.

Selection Methods: The selection will be based on curricular evaluation (10 points) and interview (10 points), with a final value of 20 points. Interviews will be held only for the three candidates who scored the three higher number of points in their curricular assessment. If the selected candidate drops out and there is another candidate on the final list with a score equal to or higher than 16, the jury will proceed to select that candidate. In case of a tie in the first two positions, the candidates will be called for a second interview, with an evaluation metric between 0 and 10 points.

[2] 2 PhD Research Studentships - Art History

Research fields: Art History

1. Scope:
The Art History Institute (IHA/NOVA FCSH) opens a tender for the award of 2 (two) PhD Research Studentships, under the FCT Regulation for Research Studentships (RBI), and the Research Fellow Holder Statute (EBI).

The research project leading to the completion the academic doctoral degree will take place at the Art History Institute (IHA/NOVA FCSH, Lisbon), which will be the host institution for the studenship holders, not precluding the possibility of the work being carried out in collaboration between more than one institution.

The research activities leading to the attainment of the academic doctoral degree of the selected fellowship holders must be framed in the IHA's activity plan and strategy, and must be developed within the scope of the following doctoral programs:

- Doctoral program in Art History, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa
- Doctoral program in Art Studies, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa
- Doctoral program in Urban Studies, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas da Universidade NOVA de Lisboa e do ISCTE-IUL

The candidate does not have to know Portuguese but must learn it during the fellowship period.

2. Type:
The work plan may take place in full or in part at a national institution (fellowship in the country or mixed fellowship, respectively).

3. Work plan and objectives:
The research activities leading to the attainment of the academic doctoral degree of the selected fellowship holders may focus on any subject or issue in the field of Art History, in its broadest definition, and may also articulate the field of Art History with other scientific areas. Research proposals submitted by applicants must be framed in the IHA's activity plan and strategy (see https://institutodehistoriadaarte.wordpress.com/strategy/), under which these fellowships will be awarded.

The candidates must explicitly identify how their working plans an objectives will contribute to the development of the aforementioned plan and strategy.

Fellowship holders must have a main supervisor who must be an integrated researcher at the IHA and they must participate in the Doctoral Forum of the IHA, while being free to participate in all IHA activities.

4. Duration and benefits:
The duration of the fellowships is (as a rule) annual, renewable up to a maximum of four years (48 months), and fellowships cannot be awarded for a period of less than 3 consecutive months.

In the case of a mixed fellowship, the period of the work plan that takes place at a foreign institution cannot exceed 24 months.

5. Application details:
Under penalty of non-admission to this call, the following documents must be submitted:

- Identity card/citizen card/passport data;
- Applicant's curriculum vitae;
- Certificates of the academic degrees held, specifying the final classification (mandatory) and, if possible, the grades obtained in all courses, or, alternatively, the applicant's declaration of honor that he completed the graduation or master's degree before the application deadline;
- Record of validation of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions and record of the conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese classification scale, or, alternatively, the applicant's declaration of honor that s/he obtained validation of the foreign degree equivalent to that of graduate or master by the application deadline;
- Declaration signed by an integrated researcher from the IHA stating his availability to supervise the candidate;
- Research proposal, which should include:
> Proposal title (maximum 40 words);
> Summary of the applicant's work plan (maximum 150 words); a good summary must be clear and well-structured, showing that the candidate is able to summarize the object of study, the objectives and the main expected contributions of the research work;
> State of the art (maximum 500 words). The state of the art, or literature review, gathers and discusses published information on the subject of the work plan. Its purpose is to theoretically support the object of research, referring to previous studies, which must be interrelated and confronted, especially if they are contradictory, as well as pointing out the originality of its proposal;
> Objectives (maximum 300 words). This field is intended to describe the main research questions and the objectives to reach with the development of your project.
> Work plan / Detailed description (maximum 1000 words). In this field, you must present in detail the work plan to be developed and demonstrate how the proposed objectives will be achieved. This description must provide all the fundamental elements to allow the analysis and evaluation by the panel, namely the methodological approach, the description of the tasks to be developed, their interdependencies and sequence, as well as the corresponding execution deadlines;
> Bibliographic References. Indicate, up to a maximum of 20 bibliographical references that support your work plan, providing the necessary elements to the panel for its identification. You should format your bibliographic list consistently and in accordance with an approved scientific referencing style, such as the APA (American Psychological Association) standard.

Note: exceeding the maximum number of words indicated in each field of the research project is sufficient reason for application exclusion.

Write the application and all associated documents in Portuguese or in English.

Regarding the above mentioned admissibility requirements, it is important to note:

In the case of academic degrees awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and in order to ensure that the application follows the principle of equal treatment to candidates holding foreign and national academic degrees, the recognition of these grades and the conversion of their final classification to the Portuguese classification scale is mandatory.

The recognition of academic degrees and foreign diplomas, as well as the conversion of the final classification (GPA) to the Portuguese classification scale, may be requested in any public higher education institution, or in the General-Directorate of Higher Education (DGES, only for the case of automatic recognition). Only candidates who have completed the cycle of studies leading to a graduate degree or master degree at the time of the application deadline will be admitted. If they do not yet hold the certificate of completion of the course, a declaration of honor by the candidates, in which they declare they have completed the qualification necessary for the purpose of the tender by the end of the application deadline, will be accepted. The awarding of the studentship is always dependent on delivering of evidence, in the contracting stage, of the completion of the necessary academic qualifications.

To apply for the PhD Research Fellowship it is necessary to:

- Hold a BA degree or MA degree in Art History, or in related areas in the field of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences;
- Living in Portugal on a permanent and regular basis;
- Not having benefited from a doctoral fellowship or doctoral fellowship in companies directly funded by the FCT, regardless of its duration.
