Would you like to work with a world-class collection of art and visual culture? Can you communicate the history of art and contemporary art to non-specialist audiences?

The Science Museum Group (SMG) has world-class collections in Art and Visual Culture. To support the exhibition programme and development of the Museum’s Art Collection (based at the Science Museum in London), we are now seeking an experienced curator with a strong knowledge of art, visual culture and an understanding of how to engage audiences.

As Curator of Art and Visual Culture, you will advise on display and preservation of new and existing artworks, as well as guide art commissioning across all the museums in the Science Museum Group. You will also with colleagues across SMG to explore and catalogue our existing scientific and technological art collections, creating opportunities for new digital access. You will work alongside other specialist curators in the museum’s team, fostering links with external stakeholders, including other museums, artists and makers, and industry. You will also develop strategies for embedding our fine and contemporary art collections in SMG’s forward programmes of temporary exhibitions and permanent galleries and ensure a presence for them in SMG’s social and broadcast media outputs.

Joining us, you will have broad knowledge of the history of art in relation to science, technology and medicine. You will bring experience of working in a museum or art gallery environment, with a passion for inclusion and the ability to communicate the history of art and contemporary art to non-specialist audiences, for example through exhibitions, articles, blogs, outreach or teaching. You will have excellent communication skills with a track record of working collaboratively, influencing, and leading discussions with, multiple different stakeholders, including Directors and Trustees.

The Science Museum Group (SMG) is here to inspire futures. As the world’s leading group of science museums, we share our unparalleled collection spanning science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine with over five million visitors each year. Joining us as an employee, you will have the opportunity to develop your career in a world-class museum group. We know work/life balance and wellbeing is crucial to our colleagues, so we currently offer up to 25 days annual leave in addition to bank holidays; employee assistance programme; enhanced contributory pension; enhanced occupational sick, maternity, paternity and adoption leave and career breaks.

‘Open for All’ is one of the Science Museum Group’s five core values and sets out our important aspiration to be a place for everyone. As a national museum group, we have an ability to reach a wide and diverse population of audiences, colleagues and partners through our geography and scale.

We are working hard to understand our organisation better and to foster a culture that recognises and values different backgrounds, mindsets, skills, experience, knowledge and expertise. By having greater diversity, we believe that we will be a stronger and better organisation and ultimately will be able to inspire more futures. We therefore welcome applications from those who bring difference.
