ON THE PERIPHERY OF CINEMA ? PRACTICES · MATERIALS · OBJECTS
17. ? 18. June 2010
Collaborative workshop of the graduate research programs "Mediale
Historiographien/Media of History ? History of Media" of the
Universities Weimar, Erfurt, and Jena and "Senses ? Technology ?
Mise-en-Scene: Media and Perception" of the University of Vienna
Guest Lectures:
Tom Gunning (University of Chicago) and Stefan Andriopoulos (Columbia
University, New York)
Location:
Graduiertenkolleg Mediale Historiographien · Berkaer Str. 11 · Weimar
The prevailing discourse of cinema situates the camera, projector, and
the
screen as the most prominent objects constituting the moving image. But
when one looks at the moving image from the intersection of adjacent
representational practices, an entire range of heterogeneous objects,
materials, and techniques move into the foreground. The introduction of
materials and practices from the arts, theater, and the archive ? in the
form of postcards or found-footage material ? transform the constitution
of the cinematic apparatus, bringing forth arrangements of ever-changing
interactions between objects and visual regimes. These practices not
only
signal the radical reinvention of cinematic space at different
historical
moments, but also reflect deeper epistemological shifts in our
understanding of history. By examining the relationship between cinema
and
a wider range of visual and presentational media, this workshop explores
alternate methods of rethinking the teleological view of the history of
the moving image.

AN DER PERIPHERIE DES KINOS. PRAKTIKEN · MATERIALIEN · OBJEKTE
17. ? 18. Juni 2010
Kooperations-Workshop des Graduiertenkollegs "Mediale Historiographien"
Weimar, Erfurt und Jena und des Initiativkollegs "Sinne ? Technik ?
Inszenierung: Medien und Wahrnehmung", Universität Wien
Gastvorträge:
Tom Gunning (University of Chicago) und Stefan Andriopoulos (Columbia
University, New York)
Ort:
Graduiertenkolleg Mediale Historiographien · Berkaer Str. 11 · Weimar
angrenzenden Repräsentationspraktiken her, kommen zahlreiche heterogene
