A colleague and I are conducting research on portraiture of the Tudor
period that is now held in public or semi-public (e.g., corporate)
collections in the US. Our purpose is to identify portraits that have been
removed from their geographic historical context and that have thereby
lost their identity, either through mis-identification or complete loss of
labeling. Our goal is to begin the process of restoring faces to some of
the historical actors of the Tudor-era for whom portraits have survived.
The success thus far of our search for portraits has been limited because
of the sheer number of collections and museums in the US and the wide
variation in the availability and quality of online databases and printed
catalogues. We would therefore be very grateful if members of the list
who are aware of any sixteenth-century English portraits in US
collections could alert us to them. We seek portraits both with and
without identification. The more specific and complete the information,
the better for us, of course: location, institution or collection, current
identification and artist attribution, accession number. But we would also
be grateful and delighted to receive even a brief sentence giving just the
name and location of the collection. Our sincere thanks in advance for any
assistance you are able to offer.
