The Warburg Institute occupies a unique place in European intellectual
life. It is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of the classical
tradition, exploring the abiding influence of the ancient world on the
art, thought, literature, religion and social customs of Europe and the
Near East. It comprises a Library, a Photographic Collection and an
Archive, and offers a programme of public lectures, seminars and
colloquia, distinguished in-house research and an innovative programme of
postgraduate teaching. It is a member-Institute of the University of
London's School of Advanced Study.
Applications for the post of Director are invited from scholars of
international standing in areas of study relevant to the Institute.
Alongside an excellent record of research and publications, the Director
will bring vision along with the ability to provide strong academic and
organisational leadership and will develop the Institute's national role
by sustaining and forging productive links with a national and
international community of scholars. It is expected that where appropriate
a suitably qualified candidate will be appointed to the chair of the
History of the Classical Tradition.
The appointee will be accountable to the Dean of the School and will be
expected to contribute to the management and governance of the School and
to the development of its policies and practices.
